Contents

Topics of relevance to the nursing profession, for example, getting around the hospital, health interviews, anatomical words, nursing procedures, various symptoms and illnesses, medication and treatment methods, giving instructions to patients.

Conversation practice and simulated client interaction; reading articles; giving a presentation; writing assignment, tasks in Moodle.

Contents

Topics to be covered during the course are, for example, vocabulary on Finnish healthcare, healthcare professions, interviewing patients, anatomical terms, nursing procedures, various symptoms and illnesses, medication and treatment methods, and giving instructions to patients.

Written communication consists of simple expressions and there are plentiful mistakes. The language is clumsy, but the message is delivered. Transitions are not smooth. Much of the text lacks logic, and is not in keeping with the stylistic conventions of the genre. The topic is handled briefly and one-sidedly. The text does not meet all the task requirements.

Written communication is quite fluent, clear and mostly correct. The structures and professional vocabulary are adequate to deliver the message. The text has a reasonably logical structure. Transitions are mostly smooth. Minor mistakes occur concerning the genre and/or style. The topic is handled in the usual way, meeting the task requirements.

Grade 5: The student has an excellent command of the course content.

The student can speak excellent English. Interaction is very skillful, and nonverbal communication effectively supports the spoken words. The speech is targeted, extremely logical, relevant and consistent. Transitions are smooth. The speech (language, pronunciation and intonation) is fluent, clear, accurate and naturally paced.

Written communication is very fluent and versatile. The student uses varied structures and extensive professional vocabulary, making occasional mistakes only in the most complex structures. The text has a very clear and logical structure. Sentences are linked by transitions and the text flows smoothly. The student can deliver the message effortlessly in the appropriate, genre-specific style. The handling of the topic is diverse and skillful, meeting all the task requirements.

- can manage in everyday written and oral communication situations at work
- understands and successfully uses the basic terminology and concepts of their own field
- learns how to give an oral presentation in English on a professional topic
- becomes familiar with different professional English texts, practices summarizing and focusing on the main ideas and leading a discussion in a group

Implementation and methods of teaching

The course topics are introduced and discussed in class/in online sessions. The course is communicative and interactive: Students work in small teams and in pairs throughout the course but also do individual coursework. The course may include a small-scale collaborative learning project with students from another group (e.g., International Business).

A student who meets the course learning objectives at an excellent level and has used English at work and for professional purposes may opt to take an exemption exam. The exam has two parts: a written and an oral part. The student must score 80% or more to pass the written part. After passing the written part, the student may take the oral part by giving a professional presentation in English. There is no material package available for the exemption exam; skills must be demonstrated based on experience.

The exemption exam may be taken once; no retakes. A student who fails the exam is required to take the course later. No exceptions.

A student who wants to opt for the exemption exam must contact the instructor at the start of the semester before the course is scheduled to start.

Workload: 100-110 hours. A student's workload consists of actively participating in the scheduled classes, studying the required course materials, and completing the required written and oral assignments.

The course is taught at the B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This is equal to scoring 6 or 6.5 in the IELTS test or having been graded M or higher in English in the Finnish matriculation examination.

Students can opt to take an automated online proficiency test at the start of their studies. Those who fail the test are strongly advised to complete a preparatory course in English (English Prep Course 3 credits) before or alongside taking English for Work.

Assessment criteria

Regular and active participation. All compulsory assignments completed by the set deadlines. A possible midterm exam, but assessment is mainly based on course assignments and active participation.

Meetings on campus ans study material, exercises, and assignments on Moodle. Both written and spoken exercises and assignments.

Contents

Students will:
- learn the main terminology and concepts of their own field
- recognize and apply different sources and tools to help improve their English skills
- managing written and oral communication situations required in professional studies and at work: correct/appropriate use of language (grammar, formal vs. informal style).

The course is taught at a B2 level according to the Common European Framework. The teaching and working language on the course is English.

Grade 1: The student has a satisfactory knowledge of the course content.

The speech is understandable with some difficulty to follow. Transitions are not handled smoothly, and the speech lacks logic and structure. Interaction is mostly missing. The speech is hesitant, pauses are rather long and pronunciation mistakes sometimes make it hard to understand the message. The student uses only basic structures and makes some mistakes.

Written communication consists of simple expressions and there are plentiful mistakes. The language is clumsy, but the message is delivered. Transitions are not smooth. Much of the text lacks logic, and is not in keeping with the stylistic conventions of the genre. The topic is handled briefly and one-sidedly. The text does not meet all the task requirements.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

Grade 3: The student has a good command of the course content.

The student can speak well, interacts with the partner/audience and uses means of nonverbal communication. The speech is easy to follow. Transitions are not always handled successfully. The speech is fluent and clear, but pauses, hesitations and pronunciation mistakes may occur.

Written communication is quite fluent, clear and mostly correct. The structures and professional vocabulary are adequate to deliver the message. The text has a reasonably logical structure. Transitions are mostly smooth. Minor mistakes occur concerning the genre and/or style. The topic is handled in the usual way, meeting the task requirements.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

Grade 5: The student has an excellent command of the course content.

The student can speak excellent English. Interaction is very skillful, and nonverbal communication effectively supports the spoken words. The speech is targeted, extremely logical, relevant and consistent. Transitions are smooth. The speech (language, pronunciation and intonation) is fluent, clear, accurate and naturally paced.

Written communication is very fluent and versatile. The student uses varied structures and extensive professional vocabulary, making occasional mistakes only in the most complex structures. The text has a very clear and logical structure. Sentences are linked by transitions and the text flows smoothly. The student can deliver the message effortlessly in the appropriate, genre-specific style. The handling of the topic is diverse and skillful, meeting all the task requirements.

Implementation and methods of teaching

There are six lessons. Additionally, all students must participate in one interview session. The meetings are on Lahti campus or online on Zoom.

The course includes individual work on Moodle and assessed tasks and assignments. The assignments include CVs, job interviews, presentations, and other spoken/written work. There is no final exam. Course assignments will be graded 0-5.

Periods 1 and 2 of the fall term 2024.

Required attendance is 75 percent: student must attend four of the six meetings. Participating in one interview session it mandatory. All compulsory assignments must be completed by deadline.

Contents

The course contains professional texts and example documents for reading and self-study. The purpose is to produce a professional and correct application for a job in your field and study relevant key vocabulary.
Exercises and tasks are provided to deepen understanding of important field-specific vocabulary and concepts. In-class task and discussions are part of the lectures.
Interviews and other spoken assignments are held to exercise spoken communication in addition to in-class discussions.
