Contents
Colour, Form and Composition is a basic course in visual thinking, consisting of the basics of composition and colour. These areas of knowledge are the core to visual expression through a variety of methods.
Composition is the basis for all visual work - from the layout of pictorial elements on a two-dimensional screen or canvas, to the massing of buildings, the design of control buttons and the look of a car. Through composition, a designer, designer or artist builds a visual story and meaning through the way they place elements of an image in a physical or virtual space.
This course explores the role of composition as a key element of visual work. Through lectures and exercises, the course will study the basics of image composition. Composition is considered as a medium of expression, through which the designer's idea is conveyed to the user, the experiencer and the viewer.
Learning content will include balance, contrast, focus, movement, pattern, unity, rhythm and proportion.
The colour section of the course covers colour theory and understanding through practical exercises and lectures based on existing colour knowledge. The educational content covered includes colour circles, colour spaces, colour contrasts, colour harmonies, the three properties of colour and colour interaction. These areas will also be addressed from the point of view of the fundamentals of expression; how different colour juxtapositions and colour schemes refer to other images, carrying and conveying meanings of emotions and moods.
The aim of this unit is to develop the student's basic colour skills. We will do colour exercises through digital and physical collage and painting. In addition, we will study the analysis of colours in images and the application of colour knowledge in our own work.
Colour skills are needed in all visual work and can be applied to the realisation of two-dimensional physical or digital images, colour solutions for three-dimensional objects or colour design and colour management of different spaces and environments.
The teaching of form is carried out in workshops and in conjunction with composition.
Assessment criteria
This is how you complete the Colour, Form and Composition course:
1. Attend the course contact meetings on campus and remotely
2. learn the course content on colour, form and composition through lectures and the teaching material in Moodle.
3. you will complete and return the assignments given in the course on the course's moodle platform

Implementation and methods of teaching
Teaching can be delivered face-to-face or at a distance. Distance learning can take place either on the premises of the university or on your own computer. The school has powerful computers and the necessary software. For independent study at the school, students must have headphones.
If students study remotely away from the school, they must have the appropriate hardware and software. (Adobe Photoshop) Learning with a laptop trackpad is not possible, but requires either a mouse or a drawing pad. A drawing pad is the recommended purchase for the longer term and will be reviewed at the beginning of the section.
For distance learning, a video link can be used. For this purpose, the student must have access to a room that allows the use of a video link. Suitable facilities can be found, for example, at the university.
Teaching methods: lectures, demos, exercises, exam.
Timing and attendance
The course requires participation in class. There will be a lot of material every day, so absences are not recommended. The course can be completed partly independently via distance learning online. Course assignments and exams must be completed within the given timeframe. Students are expected to participate in the discussion sessions related to the visual assignment.
Exam retakes
The course includes an exam, the time of which will be announced at the beginning of the course. If the student is unable to attend the exam on the actual exam day, the exam can be taken at a time to be announced.
Contents
The course teaches you how to use the features of Photoshop image editing software in a variety of ways, with the exception of video. In addition to using the software, you will learn concepts and terminology related to image editing and digital imaging. The course includes a visual assignment and an exam.
Assessment criteria
The course consists of a pictorial assignment, which is graded on a scale of 0-5. The course also includes an exam, which is also graded on a scale of 0-5. A pass mark of at least 1 is required for the exam, which means at least 50% correct answers.
Half of the total mark for the course will consist of the coursework and half of the exam mark. Attendance activities such as completing assignments on time and participating in discussions may raise or lower the grade by up to one point. Passing the course requires the successful completion of the course assignments.

Contents
The course focuses on practical work: during the course, students will develop a long-term photographic project, which will culminate in an exhibition. The thematic starting points for the projects are determined by the students' own interests. The course emphasizes a process-oriented, active, and methodical approach, preparing students for independent, long-term photographic work. In addition, the course encourages students to reflect on how their chosen techniques and working methods impact the visual expression, content, and interpretation of the work.
Documentary photography serves as the starting point for the course, which is also explored to some extent theoretically. Students are encouraged to develop critical evaluation skills and reflect on the possibilities and limitations of documentation in the context of art.
The course is linked to an external project through the BredaPhoto Festival's International Talent Programme. At the end of the course, students have the opportunity to apply for the festival’s 2026 exhibition program through an open call. The application is open to all course participants and is voluntary. Both the application process and the potential exhibition will take place outside the course in 2026. Participation in the exhibition may earn students credits depending on the scope of the project.
Assessment criteria
The assessment will be based on the completed visual work (50%), participation (25%) and reflective skills (25%), and will be graded on a scale of 1-5. The emphasis on visual work is 50 percent.
