During the course, participants will engage in an international workshop, focusing on collaborative group participation, critical deliberations on the potential and constraints of the photographic medium within contemporary culture, its relevance, and how the students see their own practice in relation to contemporary issues and an international art scene. Additionally, ample networking opportunities will be provided, fostering connections among colleagues and facilitating peer-to-peer exchange.

Part 1: Basics of film narration (5 ECTS) - Teacher: Vantte Lindevall

The course introduces the basics of film narration and learns to plan, shoot, record and edit video and audio material. With the help of theory and practical exercises, we familiarize ourselves with various moving picture principles, dramaturgy, shooting and audio recording equipment and editing software. The final project is a short film or video.

The student can

- make an coherent, ready-to-distribute short film or video from the recorded material for various publishing channels

Part 2: Documentary film (10 ECTS) - Teacher: Vantte Lindevall

The course introduces the tradition, genres, modes and work process of documentary film. With the help of theory and practical exercises, we learn about the narrative methods of documentary film, moral and more deeply about the dramaturgy, shooting and audio recording equipment and editing software. The final project will be a documentary film.

Implementation and methods of teaching

Teaching is partly delivered face-to-face, distance learning and online. Distance learning can take place either on the premises of the institution or on your own computer. The school has powerful computers and the necessary software. For on-site learning, students must have headphones.

If the student is studying remotely away from the school, he or she needs to have the appropriate hardware and software (Adobe Photoshop) Studying with a laptop trackpad is not possible and requires either a mouse or a drawing pad. A drawing pad is the recommended purchase for the longer term and will be reviewed at the beginning of the section.

Teaching methods: lectures, demos, exercises, exam.

Timing and attendance

The course requires participation in class. There will be a lot of material every day, so absences are not recommended. The course can be completed partly independently via distance learning online. Course assignments and exams must be completed within the given timeframe. Students are expected to participate in the discussion sessions related to the visual assignment.

Exam retakes

The course includes an exam, the time of which will be announced at the beginning of the course. If the student is unable to attend the exam on the actual exam day, the exam can be taken at a time to be announced.

Contents

The course teaches you how to use the features of Photoshop image editing software in a variety of ways, with the exception of 3D and video. In addition to using the software, you will learn concepts and terminology related to image editing and digital imaging. The course includes a visual assignment and an exam.

Assessment criteria

The course consists of a pictorial assignment, which is graded on a scale of 0-5. The course also includes an exam, which is also graded on a scale of 0-5. A pass mark of at least 1 is required for the exam, which means at least 50% correct answers.

Half of the total mark for the course will consist of the coursework and half of the exam mark. Attendance activities such as completing assignments on time and participating in discussions may raise or lower the grade by up to one point. Passing the course requires the successful completion of the course assignments.

An approved mark for the course (grades 1-5) requires an approved exam (at least grade 1) and an approved visual assignment (at least grade 1) according to the instructions.

Contents

This session will introduce you to the use of a interchangeable-lens digital camera through practical exercises. The characteristics of lenses with different focal lengths are also introduced. In addition to camera technology, you will learn the basics of digital imaging, how to open and manipulate raw files and how to manage image files. We will also learn about the school's large format printers and the basics of colour management.

The course will study photographic expression. The course includes a photographic assignment.

No previous knowledge required. The course uses the school's camera equipment. In some cases it is possible to use your own equipment in addition to the school's cameras, but the tasks must be carried out mainly with shared equipment.

Assessment criteria

The assessment will be based on a photographic assignment, an exam and active participation and attendance. Half of the assessment will be based on the assignment and half on the exam. Attendance may raise or lower the grade for the assignment and the exam by up to one point. The sectional assignment will be assessed in terms of visual expression, work process and technical execution.

Contents

The course focuses on making: during the course, students will work on a long time photographic project, which will culminate in an exhibition. The thematic starting points for the projects undertaken during the course will vary according to the students' own interests, but the course will focus on a process-oriented, active and methodologically structured approach. The idea is also to encourage students to reflect on the possibilities and limitations of their chosen techniques and methods, and how expressive choices affect meanings.

The course provides an in-depth look at the many nuances of documentary and prepares students for independent, sustained photographic practice. The course takes documentary as its starting point, which is also approached theoretically. The course encourages students to develop critical evaluation skills and to reflect on the possibilities and limitations of documentation in the context of art.

The course culminates in an external exhibition project - Utopias Lahti 2025. Towards the end of the course, there will be teaching in exhibition architecture under the guidance of a part-time teacher. An open call for the student exhibition at the festival will be organized at the end of the course. Participation in the festival is application-based, voluntary, and takes place outside the course in 2025. Students can earn credits based on the scope of their involvement in the project.

The assessment will be based on the completed visual work (50%), participation (25%) and reflective skills (25%), and will be graded on a scale of 1-5. 

The emphasis on visual work is 50 percent.

The student's participation in classes and the returned assignments indicate that the student has mastered the course content. The student has completed a photographic based project, but the final result is scarce and would require further work. The student has completed the given written assignments, but they are scarce in content.

The active participation of the student in the lessons and the assignments they have completed show that they are engaged in their own work and in the content of the lessons. The student has been able to choose methodological solutions appropriate to the subject matter and to complete the work as an exhibition. The student has been able to choose images and texts as a basis for his/her own writing. The texts are complete and reflect the student's own thinking and interpretation.

The active participation of the student in the lessons and the assignments they have completed indicate a particular commitment to their own work and to the content of the lessons. The student has been able to choose methodological solutions appropriate to the subject matter and to complete the work as an exhibition, which is an original and finished work. The student has shown an insightful ability to choose images and texts as a basis for his/her own writing. The texts are publishable entities in which the student's own thinking and interpretation bring out original perspectives on the subject.

Contents

During the course, a photography publication will be realised according to the plan. The work will be done in interaction with other group members and collaborators. The management of the different steps involved in the practical realisation, discussions about the photographs, the layout of the publication and other expressive content are the main contents of the course.

Contents

The course explores the idea that truth is shaped by language and context, and thus constructed. It examines photography's role in capturing reality and challenges photographers to navigate the 'post-truth' era while representing truth in their images. The course also considers the poetic nature of language and its ability to reveal deeper meanings.

The finished visual work will be assessed on a scale of 1-5. Attendance in class will influence the assessment.

Contents

The course covers the basics of film photography and darkroom work. During the course, each student will be introduced to both small and medium format film photography, as well as silver gelatine printing.

The course will be organised as a workshop in small groups, and it will also include independent work.

In addition to black and white work, the course includes lectures, assignments and discussions about photography, photographic genres, the Finnish photographic scene, the study of photography and personal starting points as a photographer and student.

No previous knowledge required. The camera and darkroom equipment needed will be offered by the school. In some cases, it is possible to use your own equipment in addition to the equipment provided by the school.

The assessment will be based on the visual work presented and on the level of participation and attendance. The tasks will be assessed in terms of visual expression, work process and technical execution. Attendance in class will influence the assessment.

The student is able to

Contents

At this stage of the course, the thesis has progressed to the finalisation and publication stage.
In the synthesis seminar, permission will be given to participate in the public evaluation.

The written part will be finalised, used in Turnitin and submitted to the assessors. The artwork will be finalised for the exhibition and, in the case of a dummy for a photo book, for example, will be submitted to the evaluators. The judges will have access to the exhibition work in advance in the form of a pdf of the photo booklet that will be sent to them.

Each student will be involved in the construction of the exhibition, its publicity, etc.

One or more external assessors will be invited to the assessment session. The teachers who supervised the work in the seminars will also take part in the evaluation. The communication teachers will give a written opinion on the written part of the work.'

The student uploads the completed, assessed and approved work to Theseus.
Students will take the maturity test as informed by the supervising teacher.

Contents

The planning of the thesis starts already in the spring of the third year with an information session (in zoomis).

In photography studies, a separate course on Research and Development (5 credits) guides students through the thesis planning phase. The material for this course is on Moodle and is self-paced, but with assignments 1 and 2 completed and presented at the topic seminar. These are the work plan and the disposition.

The 1 credit course on writing a thesis report is a course offered by LAB to all students and must be enrolled in Moodle on their course platform. This is included in the planning phase of the thesis.

You can start writing your thesis when you have completed around 180 credits.

Assessment criteria

Accepted performance requires active participation in the seminar, tutoring and guidance.

The thesis course consists of an artistic production and a report, their supervision and exchange seminars. The supervision sessions will monitor the progress of the thesis and reflect on its direction between the supervising teachers and the students working on the thesis.

The artistic production and the writing of the report run in parallel in the work process.

History of Art offers an overview on the history of art, architecture and design. The time span is from the present to the antiquity, the years from 1918 to 2021 underlined. Focal contents of the course are changes of the art concept, formal and trend convention development and representative elements in visual expression.

GRAPHIC DESIGN: Graphic Design Degree Project Studio sessions prepare students to advance their own thesis in a goal-oriented way. The sessions are timed to support the thesis process. GRAPHIC DESIGN: The graphic design students begin this course later Spring 2025 by preparing their own thesis project, attending seminars and lectures. During the summer students will study part of the theory on a moodle course.

We will go through the international and Finnish history of photography from the 19th century to the present day.
The history of photography in particular, but also other aspects of photography from photojournalism to fashion photography are present in the teaching.
The use of photographs and their expressive means are linked to the technological changes in the medium, but photographs also strongly reflect the social phenomena of their time. There is also a link between visual art styles, current debates in art theory and photography. The course aims to link the well-known names and images in the history of photography to these many connections, while also opening up a view of the future of photography in the digital world.
The course provides the photographer with an essential cultural knowledge base about his or her medium, a source of inspiration and a starting point for the written part of the thesis.

Shooting workshop section: students shoot a project of their own interest under the guidance of teacher Akseli Valmunen, develop a suitable shooting method and their own visual expression. Group discussions are an essential part of the workshop. The works will be finalised under the guidance of the teacher and a public group exhibition will be planned and held in spring 2025.

In the image analysis section, students will read theoretical texts on visual culture, look at images and learn how to write, among other things, photographic criticism and analytical reflections on images with reference to literary sources. The course prepares students for writing a thesis, for example.
