Implementation and methods of teaching

Building competence requires active presence throughout the course. Attendance is compulsory at the starting day and the last day of the course. Timetable: Found at TimeEdit, the daily programme of the course will be indicated at the beginning of the course.

The course will be taught face-to-face on campus, mainly on Mondays. The teaching day will usually always include a 1.5 hour zoom-connection with the University of São Paulo students.

Student time use and work load

On average, 5 x 27h = 135h of work are required to achieve the desired level of competence. The total number of hours is divided between face-to-face teaching, as indicated in the timetable, independent work and teamwork.

Contents

The course provides an introduction to looking into of megatrends and new phenomena of various fields, and to working in an international team to come up with forward-looking concepts for sustainable development.

The course will cover some methods of futures thinking and ideation and teach how to detect change around us.

The essential purpose of the course is to learn to look at the field from outside your own bubble, to get to know and network with students from outside your own culture and to learn more about their culture and ways of working.

Assessment criteria

The grade will be based on attendance, activity during the campus days, the level of completion of the learning tasks.

Persistent participation as an active member of the team as well as the completion of independent tasks on your own initiative within the timetable is a priority. Peer assessment of teamwork by students will also be part of the final grade.

- Marketing and company networks
2. Company finances, taxation and accounting basics
3. Commercial, contractual and copyright rights and establishing a company
4. Group work establishing a company and business idea
- Preparing and presenting a business plan (business model canvas, pitching)
- Corporate image and brand

Implementation and methods of teaching

The course is conducted as a face-to-face course, consisting of theoretical lectures, presentations, exercises and discussions. In addition, students will work on their own and/or in groups.

The student will be able to
- utilise knowledge from futures research on weak signals in the design process

- identify and anticipate consumer needs and business environments using the knowledge generated by futures research
- assess and use AI applications as a tool in the creative sector
- use AI applications in accordance with responsible and ethical principles
- understand the overall concept and produce a fashion show or exhibition in their field.

The studio is divided into three different sections for the autumn and spring semesters. An 80% attendance rate is required for successful completion.

The 540 hours of the 20-credit studio consist of face-to-face teaching and independent as well as group work (320-340 hours).

Contents

During the studio, students will consider the future of the clothing industry from several angles. The studio aims to develop the student's own thinking and knowledge of new tools. Students will learn about futures thinking and the importance of knowledge generated by research in the design process, and will acquire the technical, knowledge and skills that will be useful in the future when working in the industry. As part of the studio, a Spring 2025 KOE fashion show will be designed and produced.

The course consists of lectures and group and individual tasks. Course materials will be published in the Moodle learning environment. The lectures take place in the course specific zoom site.

The course consists of 5 lectures (4 hours each). Mandatory presence min. 80%. First contact teaching day is mandatory to all participants.

Study materials will be published in Moodle e-learning environment. The iInstitute of Design Design method materials in the Moodle by LAB Institute of Design are recommended.

Contents

Research and development methods are the core part of the thesis work studies. The content of the course consists of design research methods and thesis work guide lines. Main goal of the course is the individual thesis work report plan including the thesis project theoretical disposition and the research and development questions.

The 1 credit course on writing a thesis report is a course organised by the LAB for all students, who must register for it in Moodle on their own course platform. The course is delivered by distance learning. This is included in the planning phase of the thesis.

Working life cooperation

Individual theses may be carried out as assignments from working life or in cooperation with working life partners. In such cases, the student will enter into a contract with the employer in accordance with the LAB guidelines.

The thesis design component is 5 credits, equivalent to approximately 135 hours of student work (one credit 27 hours). 

Contents

The planning of the thesis starts already in the spring of the third year with an information session (in zoomis).  
A separate course on Research and Development in Thesis (5 credits) guides students through the thesis planning phase. The course is devided into two parts: general for all design students by Heikki Saros (2 credits) and wearable design by a subject teacher (3 credits). The material for this course is in Moodle. Tasks are to be completed and presented at the seminar.

The 1 credit course on writing a thesis report is a course offered by LAB to all students and must be enrolled in Moodle on their course platform. This is included in the planning phase of the thesis.

You can start writing your thesis when you have completed around 180 credits. 

Assessment criteria

Accepted performance requires active participation in the seminar, tutoring and guidance.  

Competency-based assessment:
