Osaamistavoitteet

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

- Demonstrate awareness and understanding of atmospheric physical, thermodynamics, dynamic processes and evolving
weather in a climatic context.
- Critically appraise the coupling of urban environment to meteorological-climate, atmospheric stability.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of model outputs and interpretation.
- Identify and critically evaluate the nature, causes and implications of extreme events.
- Identify and critically evaluate the effects of climate change in urban environments .
- Demonstrate technical ability in analytical methods in the evaluation of climate change mitigation/adaptation strategies.

The module is part of MUrCS programme and carried out according to a separate module handbook available in GCULearn (eLearning platform in Glasgow Caledonian University). The module is available only for MUrCS students. The implementation is by Glasgow Caledonian University and by a visiting lecturer from University of Sao Paulo and other visitors.

- Understand how the interplay of solar radiation, Earth characteristics, and astronomical factors determines the
surface-atmosphere energy balance and the Earth climate distribution.
- Understand how dry air thermodynamics explains the concept of atmospheric stability and its consequences.
- Understand water phase change phenomena and their implications in the atmospheric energy balance.
- Understand the forces that guide the direction and speed of winds in local and global scales.
- Understand the physical aspects that drive climate change

Osaamistavoitteet

The student is able to
- understand the main features about the history of the cities
- identify and define different values in urban built environment as well as means to preserve them
- understand important international treaties and national legislation protecting valuable environments as well as the meaning of international organisations in preservation
- present case examples to demonstrate the variability of built heritage and means to preserve it (for example town planning, local participation of civil society, renovation)

Toteutustapa ja opetusmenetelmät

The course is carried out virtually, containing virtual lectures, learning materials in Moodle and individual courseworks. Finnish students can submit their courseworks in Finnish.

Ajoitus ja läsnäolo

The course will be available on 20th September in Moodle. The duration of the course is until 15th December. Submission of the courseworks is scheduled in Moodle.

Sisältö

The main topics in the course are the following viewpoints:

• Understanding how the values of urban environment are understood and defined.
• How to enhance preservation in international and national levels
• The opportunities to protect valuable built environments in challenging situations
• Evaluate different processes of preservation through case studies and analyse the roles and impacts of different stakeholders in them.
• Develop ideas by which methods the preservation of urban environment can be carried out in different case studies.

Sisältö

The module concentrates on the field of urban planning and development in different urban and cultural contexts. The main goal is to understand the impacts of urbanisation in different parts of the world. Also the module introduces shortly the main features of urban history and introduces examples of transition processes in urban areas. Questions of different roles in planning processes are discussed, as well as examples of different planning systems and practises. The impact of participation in planning and development processes is an important issue which can be demonstrated with the help of different case studies and practises. Theoretical approach to urban planning is introduced. The management of urban development processes provides a challenge to all developing cities and it will be introduced by several case studies.

- Discuss and apply key management methodologies on landscape planning and green infrastructure in cities
