The student is able to
- communicate clearly and effectively in different generic and field-specific workplace situations both orally and in writing
- find, evaluate and use information effectively
- function collaboratively in international working environments.

Toteutustapa ja opetusmenetelmät

The topics are first introduced online and then applied in oral or written assignments. There are both online lessons and independent working.

Ajoitus ja läsnäolo

Weekly 2-hour online lessons. The lessons are scheduled in the timetable.
Participation in lesson 4 is compulsory. If you miss it, your grade for the assignment: environmental engineering, group work will be lower.
Participation in lesson 7 is compulsory. If you miss it, your grade for the Assignment: text project will be lower.
Participation in lesson 9 is compulsory. If you miss it, you will record your presentation, but the grade for the Assignment: presentation will be lower.
A student is expected to complete all course assignments by their deadlines.

Online material in Moodle and the Internet.

Toteutuksen valinnaiset suoritustavat

If the student already meets the course objectives at an excellent level, it is possible to apply for Recognition of prior learning via demonstration. Please, submit eAHOT application thoroughly and direct it to the course teacher to receive instructions.

Uusintamahdollisuudet

There is no course exam. Assessment is based on course assignments and active participation.

Online lessons in Zoom; material and assignments in Moodle.

Opiskelijan ajankäyttö ja kuormitus

A student's workload is 4 x 27 hours, consisting of online lessons and homework.

Sisältö

The contents: education terminology; form and language of a semi-formal letter and CV; form and language of emails; what makes a good oral presentation and supporting graphics; how cultural differences affect communication; job interviews; field-related terminology and texts.

Lisätietoja opiskelijalle: mm. edeltävä osaaminen

It is recommended that you take the entry-level test (tasokoe) at the beginning of the term. If you don't pass the test, you are advised to enrol on the English Prep Course. You can do the Prep Course at the same time as the English for Work course.
If you have received grade L, E or M in the English matriculation exam, the entry-level test is not for you.

Arviointimenetelmät

Written and spoken assignments (application letter, CV, email, oral presentation or expert panel, leading a discussion group, text project, job interview). Active participation and team working also influence grading.

- write an understandable CV, email and semi-formal letter
- can manage in a job interview if gets support from the interviewer

The student can
- give essential information about themselves and their studies fairly fluently and accurately
- express and justify their opinions and defend them in a conversation clearly and fluently
- give a clear and fluent oral presentation on a topic in their field, using an appropriate style
- use the vocabulary of their field in speaking and in writing fairly fluently and skillfully
- write a clear CV, email and semi-formal letter in an appropriate style
- communicate fairly fluently in a job interview

Arviointikriteerit: taso 5 (arviointiasteikko 1-5)

The student can
- give detailed information about themselves and their studies fluently and accurately
- express and justify their opinions and defend them in a conversation effortlessly and convincingly
- give a well-structured oral presentation on a topic in their field in a professional and convincing way, using an appropriate style
- use the vocabulary of their field in speaking and in writing fluently and skillfully
- write a clear, well-structured and convincing CV, email and semi-formal letter in an appropriate style
- can communicate effortlessly and convincingly in a job interview
