Meetings with your Tutor teacher. Lectures, exercises and discussions on topics related to the stages of studies and the professional growth of students.

The course runs for the whole academic year. Face-to-face meetings once a month. 60% attendance is required for successful completion.

The course is organised as face-to-face teaching at the Lahti campus.

Student time use and work load

The course requires independent work in addition to participation in face-to-face teaching. The assumed amount of work for a student is 135 working hours, including classroom teaching.

Contents

Students learn graphic design methods in the course and carry out a design task. The practice task includes typography, layout and illustration. Acceptable completion of the course assignment requires systematic and purposeful work, considering the needs of the target group and the customer. In the course, students will learn to present their ideas and finished work to the group. There are also lectures on design thinking and graphic design concepts and theories.

This is a foundation course of the visual communication program.

Learning outcomes

- describe the most important functions of the package
- understand the role of the packaging designer in the field
- design a packaging concept including form and visual design
- compare and choose materials for a model
- use the workshops in a safe manner

Implementation and methods of teaching

Instead of a lecture type of teaching, this course is more about interaction, learning by doing, making mistakes and succeeding, alone and together. As a member of a group, the student learns to design a packaging entity. The course includes also software teaching and a project related to that.

The student will learn the basics of the packaging process through practical exercises. The teaching is based on contact hours and guidance of the small groups. The student is required to have an open mind and skills for working in a multidisciplinary group as well as a hands-on attitude. Active participation and working outside contact hours is required.

Besides the contact days, the student is required to work independently and in a group outside the contact hours. The groups/pairs will agree on the roles and the details on the group work outside the contact hours. Taking part in the kick off and presentations is mandatory.

During the course, the student learns the main functions of packaging and ow to design a packaging concept.

Assessment criteria

The evaluation is based on group work and individual work. The student's own and peer evaluations are used to help the evaluation.

Note: If the assignment is returned late, the maximum grade for that part is 3, even if the work is excellent.

Contents

The development of Western writing, styles and forms of letters. The course will also include an introduction to other writing systems. Students will learn the basics of typographic theory and become familiar with the most common practices and terminology in the field.

– An independent final project
The course includes exercises to learn the history and styles of visual communication through media archaeology, masters of typography and graphic design, and the history of photography. The course has preliminary work.

Teaching is in Finnish, slides and most of the materials are in English.

Contents

The course introduces the development of communication tools, media technology, and different branches of visual communication from the beginning of history to the present day. The classes also build an understanding of various stylistic trends, their dialogical development, and their relationship to other phenomena of the time. The international designers who have had the most significant impact on the industry will become familiar, participants will also aha an opportunity to discuss with seasoned Finnish authors as visitors.

Course materials and tasks are published in Moodle e-learning environment. The task submission is in Moodle as well. Course activity is followed by using the Moodle activity report.

Course work consists of thematic discussions bassed on research articles, group works and prsentation of an individual final task. Expected work amount is 135 hours lectures included.

Contents

The course functions as an introduction to the theory of visual culture.
Topics and materials of the course concentrate on the 20th and 21st century.
The course offers basics of picture analysis. Theoretical frames of the course are social, semiotic, semantic and psychology of perception in design, communication and art.
The course offers tools for presentation skills on visual topics.
The course content is suitable to visual communication as well as to design students.

The course involves designing a brand concept for an existing or fictional company, product or innovation.
Where possible, the course aims to organise visits or guest lecturers.
