Contents

Colour, Form and Composition is a basic course in visual thinking, consisting of the basics of composition and colour. These areas of knowledge are the core to visual expression through a variety of methods.

Composition is the basis for all visual work - from the layout of pictorial elements on a two-dimensional screen or canvas, to the massing of buildings, the design of control buttons and the look of a car. Through composition, a designer, designer or artist builds a visual story and meaning through the way they place elements of an image in a physical or virtual space.

This course explores the role of composition as a key element of visual work. Through lectures and exercises, the course will study the basics of image composition. Composition is considered as a medium of expression, through which the designer's idea is conveyed to the user, the experiencer and the viewer.

Learning content will include balance, contrast, focus, movement, pattern, unity, rhythm and proportion.
The colour section of the course covers colour theory and understanding through practical exercises and lectures based on existing colour knowledge. The educational content covered includes colour circles, colour spaces, colour contrasts, colour harmonies, the three properties of colour and colour interaction. These areas will also be addressed from the point of view of the fundamentals of expression; how different colour juxtapositions and colour schemes refer to other images, carrying and conveying meanings of emotions and moods.

The aim of this unit is to develop the student's basic colour skills. We will do colour exercises through digital and physical collage and painting. In addition, we will study the analysis of colours in images and the application of colour knowledge in our own work.

Colour skills are needed in all visual work and can be applied to the realisation of two-dimensional physical or digital images, colour solutions for three-dimensional objects or colour design and colour management of different spaces and environments.
The teaching of form is carried out in workshops and in conjunction with composition.

Assessment criteria

This is how you complete the Colour, Form and Composition course:
1. Attend the course contact meetings on campus and remotely
2. learn the course content on colour, form and composition through lectures and the teaching material in Moodle.
3. you will complete and return the assignments given in the course on the course's moodle platform

Learning outcomes

This studio course includes the following parts and their respective learning goals:

(5 ECTS)
(5 ECTS)
(10 ECTS)

Implementation and methods of teaching

In the UI/IxD studio, the students build a better user experience by combining the physical and digital space in a real client case. The course starts with planning wayfinding systems, focusing on space as an interface and people as its users. The course will use both service design and user interface design methods to build systems that make navigation as natural and frictionless as possible. As the course progresses, more digital elements, such as interactive signage, will be introduced.

Space as an interface is an inherently interdisciplinary approach to our built environment.

Students work in small groups, lead their own design process and are responsible for the final outcome.

The studio also provides theory lessons and teaches good practice in the field
Teachers mentor student teams throughout the course.
There will also be interesting visitors.

Course materials and tasks are published in Moodle e-learning environment. The task submission is in Moodle as well. Course activity is followed by using the Moodle activity report.

Timing and attendance

The course lasts for the whole spring semester
Part of the days and weeks of the course are for independent work.

Teachers are available at least once a week, often more. The exact timetable will be found on Moodle.
Attendance mandatory on the theory and visit days indicated in the timetable.

Learning material and recommended literature

Central course litterature:

Further reading and material used in the teaching will be added to Moodle e-learning environment.

Working life cooperation

Real life projects with clients. Visit to studios and outside organisations. Guest lectures from the design field.

Learning environment

Campus, excursions, moodle and other online tools

Student time use and work load

The student is able to
- present their work to peer audiences and evaluate them critically
- make use of various visual idea generation methods
- use personal observations and emotions as a starting point for creative thinking
- make connections between visual arts and other forms of visual culture
- analyse, interpret and explain contemporary visual culture.

Implementation and methods of teaching

In the Visual Design/Visual Expression course, we will create a group exhibition on the Mukkula campus.

For the exhibition, you can make an artistic, design or other creative process output either in a group or alone.

During the exhibition project we will learn to identify our own creative skills and personal content in creative work. We will learn to perceive the creative process and to identify a creative way of working that is natural to us.

We will discuss art and design using discursive methods of interpretation and critical thinking, learning concepts and ways of thinking specific to the creative fields.

We will produce an exhibition together, and learn the skills of collaborative creative processes.

Producing an exhibition involves activities such as publicity, hanging, hanging, opening, documentation, dismantling and maintenance.

During the session, a project portfolio will be compiled to document your own creative process.

The course will be taught on the Mukkula campus. The learning methods include independent learning tasks, lectures, group co-design, tutorial discussions on the processes of the works, a final discussion in which the finished works are interpreted and evaluated, peer evaluation in group discussions and self-evaluation during the process using a process portfolio.

Visual design

Implementation description

Visual Design is a basic course in visual and creative thinking. This five-credit course involves the conceptualisation, design, development and implementation of a creative design or artistic process, the final product of which is presented to the public. The output may be a body of work for a collective exhibition, a performance, a short film or a service design concept.

Artistic and design outputs will be discussed and jointly evaluated during the course. The creative process will also be examined and learnt how to evaluate it. Visual thinking will be developed through practical visual work and by comparing it with other visual cultures. A critical approach to evaluation, discussion and thinking will be applied in discussions.

The creative process will be approached in stages, with tools for ideation, design and artistic thinking provided for the different stages. Through your own creative work, you will explore your own thinking, feelings and perception as a starting point for visual work.

Assessment criteria

Tutoring discussions during the process
Evaluation of the creative process by assessing the process portfolio
Self-evaluation
Peer evaluation in group discussions
Final discussion to evaluate the finished body of work
