Learning outcomes

The student is able to

- gain an understanding of multicultural teams, leadership and communication in multicultural teams.
- further develop one’s understanding/awareness of how culture-related themes affect team dynamics, leadership and influence the overall outcomes of a multicultural team.
- apply alternative solutions in challenging multicultural teamwork/situations.
- carry out a charity event as a course project for a specific customer segment in Finnish society.

Implementation and methods of teaching

The course will be implemented via weekly lessons and a charity project will be completed in co-operation with local community.

Timing and attendance

The course lessons are held once a week.. Completion of course assignment(s) is compulsory in order to complete the course. No substitute work given for course completion.

Course material supplied by the lecturer. Other recommended course/topic-related material will be stated at the first course lesson and are listed in the course platform - Moodle.

Working life cooperation

Charity project will be carried out in co-operation with local community.

5 ECTS = 135 student work hours (1 ECTS = 27 hours of student work).

Contents

The course focuses on teams, teamworking, multicultural teams, (global virtual teams) and multicultural team leadership and communication in multicultural teams. Students will further develop their understanding / awareness of how culturally-related themes affect team dynamics, leadership and influence the overall outcomes of a multicultural and/or global virtual team. In addition, student’s will improve their ability to communicate effectively in multicultural/virtual teams.

Prerequisites: Intercultural Awareness course or Intercultural Competence and Communication or any other Intercultural competence/communication course.

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student understands, in practice, the theories and practices of team working, multicultural team working and leadership in teams. The student acknowledges the existence/importance of cultural influences in multicultural team working, leadership and communication in multicultural settings. The student completes course assignment(s).

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student understands, in practice, the theories and practices of team working, multicultural team working and leadership in teams. The student acknowledges and understands the existence/importance of cultural influences in multicultural team working, leadership and communication in multicultural settings. The student actively participates in lessons and completes the course assignment(s).

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student has excellent knowledge of theories and practices of team working, multicultural team working and leadership in teams and is able to utilize them both in lessons/activities. The student is able to recognize and apply his/her knowledge in cultural influences in multicultural team working, leadership and communication in multicultural settings. The student actively participates and completes the course assignment(s).
