Implementation and methods of teaching

Online (100%) via Moodle. Individual and team work. Independent study, guidance provided by the teacher on request (via email). Assignments to complete according to instructions and to hand in for the teacher to provide feedback and assessment. Self-evaluation.

Timing and attendance

No scheduled meetings, no contact classes either online or on campus. However, students must adhere to given deadlines for assignments. Some time for online teamwork must be arranged in small groups or pairs.

Learning material and recommended literature

Provided by the teacher on Moodle. Online reading materials, exercises, assignments, and a test.

Exam retakes

Students who fail the course will need to complete the course requirements within one year (12 months) from the end of the course period. Consult the teacher to agree on retakes of failed assignments and upgrading exams.

Learning environment

Online (100%) via Moodle. Email for communication between the students and the teacher.

The approximate student workload is 80 hours, divided evenly over the course.

The course is taught at a B2 level according to the Common European Framework. Students who have successfully completed other business writing or correspondence courses in English are not recommended to take this course.

Assessment criteria

Students are to complete the assignments according to the given timetable, pass a test, and write a self-evaluation essay at the end of the course. The teacher assesses the students' performance individually on a scale of 5-0 (certain assignments Pass/Fail). Failed/grade 0 assignments and a failed test can be retaken twice. If the student completes the course (grade 4-1) but wishes to upgrade, one attempt is allowed. Consult the teacher about retakes and upgrade exams.

The student has met the assignment requirements fully. Work displays consistent and appropriate register. Content is effective, diverse and skillfully delivered. This is a very independent online course and all of the material can be found on Moodle. There are no fixed lessons though brief Zoom sessions to answer questions are available upon request.

Timing and attendance

The course has no attendance requirements, but steady, week-by-week progress is expected. Deadlines are provided on Moodle and students are expected to adhere to them. Late submissions will result in grade penalties as well as delayed grading.

Course objective:
Students are able to produce effective business documents using appropriate genres and styles. They can use standard business document templates and apply the terminology used in most common business documents.

Course contents:
1. Formal language for writing business documents (specific to this course)
2. Common business transaction documents (e.g, inquiry letter, reply letter, quotation letter, etc.)
3. Information regarding delivery and payments in business transactions
4. Other business letters

It is expected students can communicate in English at B2 level (CEFR).

Assessment criteria

Students will complete a number of small written assignments, some of which may be graded Pass/Fail, others on a 0-5 scale. Completion of all assignments will contribute to the final course grade.

- Business transaction documents, such as inquiry, reply, request for quotation, etc.
- Other business documents, such as guest speaker invitation, memo, press release, etc.

Implementation and methods of teaching

100-prosenttinen verkkototeutus. HUOM. Päiväryhmä LLTILII22K ilmoittautuu omaan kurssitoteutukseensa (3010-loppuinen). Opintojakso sisältää eri tavoin toteutettuja asiantuntijapuheenvuoroja/-kirjoituksia, tiedon etsintää sekä kontaktointia sidosryhmiin, esimerkiksi yrittäjiin ja potentiaalisiin asiakkaisiin. Palautettavia tehtäviä on kaksi: yksilötehtävä ja neljän hengen ryhmissä tehtävä harjoitustyö. Harjoitustyössä on kolme suoritusvaihtoehtoa: perinteinen raporttimuotoinen työ, BMC-muotoinen työ sekä liiketoimintasuunnitelma. Kurssilla hyödynnetään yhteistyömahdollisuudet StartHubin, Lahden Seudun Kehitys LADEC Oy:n ja yrittäjäjärjestöjen kanssa. Tervetuloa mukaan!

Implementation and methods of teaching

Online (100%) via Moodle. Individual and team work. Independent study, guidance provided by the teacher on request (via email). Assignments to complete according to instructions and to hand in for the teacher to provide feedback and assessment. Self-evaluation.

Timing and attendance

No scheduled meetings, no contact classes either online or on campus. However, students are expected adhere to the given deadlines for assignments.

Provided by the teacher on Moodle. Online reading materials, exercises, assignments, and a test in the EXAM system.

Alternative completion methods

Recognition of prior learning (RPL): The student must submit an application before or immediately after the start of the course. Neither a pathway student (nor an open UAS student) can apply for RPL.

Exam retakes

Students who fail the course will need to complete the course requirements within one year (12 months) from the end of the course period. Consult the teacher to agree on retakes of failed assignments and test, and upgrading exams.

Learning environment

Online (100%) via Moodle. Email for communication between the students and the teacher.

The approximate student workload is 80 hours, divided evenly over the course.

The course is taught at a B2 level according to the Common European Framework. Students who have successfully completed other business writing or correspondence courses in English are not recommended to take this course.

Assessment criteria

Students are to complete the assignments according to the given timetable, pass a test, and write a self-evaluation essay at the end of the course. The teacher assesses the students' performance individually on a scale of 5-0 or Pass/Fail. Failed/grade 0 assignments and a failed test can be retaken twice. If the student completes the course (grade 4-1) but wishes to upgrade, one attempt is allowed. Consult the teacher about retakes and upgrade exams.

Implementation and methods of teaching

The student will complete the course 100% online via Moodle. There are no (contact) lessons. The student will study the course material independently and practice their reading and writing skills through assignments. The assignments consist of reading both popular and academic texts using various reading strategies, completing Moodle quizzes based on their understanding of the text, as well as completing (a) written assignment(s). As this is a seven-week intensive course, hard deadlines - > given deadlines must be adhered to for successful continuation of course content (from one part to the next) and for the successful completion of the course.

Timing and attendance

1st period of autumn semester (term) 2024.
This is an intensive, seven-week course, i.e., the duration of the course is seven (7) weeks (2 September - 18 October).
Online course, no Zoom, no classroom attendance requirements.
Hard deadlines. If a student fails to meet a deadline, they fail the course.
Once the course ends/closes, i.e., 18 October, no assignment parts/assignments/tasks/quiz completions are accepted/graded/allowed.

The overall workload estimate is 81 hours of individual work, including studying the course material, reading texts, completing quizzes, and working on (the) assignment(s).
A student will study the theory material, read popular science and academic articles and complete Moodle quizzes and written assignments based on them. In addition, the student will read one popular science article and one academic article of their choice and complete (a) written assignment(s) based on them.
Hard deadlines. In other words, it is expected that students adhere to given course/assignment deadlines. If a student fails to meet a deadline, they fail the course.

Learning vocabulary-building strategies, reading techniques (skimming, scanning, critical reading), text structure by using reading comprehension exercises and summary writing.

Students are able to
- comprehend, analyze and summarize authentic professional texts in English
- learn and master strategies for expanding professional vocabulary
- use strategies for effective reading.

Implementation and methods of teaching

The student will complete the course 100% online via Moodle. There are no (contact) lessons. The student will study the course material independently and practice their reading and writing skills through assignments. The assignments consist of reading both popular and academic texts using various reading strategies, completing Moodle quizzes based on their understanding of the text, as well as completing (a) written assignment(s). As this is a seven-week intensive course, hard deadlines - > given deadlines must be adhered to for successful continuation of course content (from one part to the next) and for the successful completion of the course.

Timing and attendance

1st period of autumn semester (term) 2024.
This is an intensive, seven-week course, i.e., the duration of the course is seven (7) weeks (2 September - 18 October).
Online course, no Zoom, no classroom attendance requirements.
Hard deadlines. If a student fails to meet a deadline, they fail the course.
Once the course ends/closes, i.e., 18 October, no assignment parts/assignments/tasks/quiz completions are accepted/graded/allowed.

Learning environment

The course is completed independently by the student and fully online through Moodle.

Student time use and work load

The overall workload estimate is 81 hours of individual work, including studying the course material, reading texts, completing quizzes, and working on (the) assignment(s).
A student will study the theory material, read popular science and academic articles and complete Moodle quizzes and written assignments based on them. In addition, the student will read one popular science article and one academic article of their choice and complete (a) written assignment(s) based on them.
Hard deadlines. In other words, it is expected that students adhere to given course/assignment deadlines. If a student fails to meet a deadline, they fail the course.

Contents

Learning vocabulary-building strategies, reading techniques (skimming, scanning, critical reading), text structure by using reading comprehension exercises and summary writing.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

No prerequisites. Course taught at a level of B2.

Assessment criteria

Grading on a scale of 1 - 5.

Students are expected to complete all assignments/tasks/online quizzes according to given instructions and given deadlines. If a student fails to meet a deadline, they fail the course.

The student fails to complete the assignments according to given assignment instructions in/on time or the submitted assignment(s) repeatedly fail(s) to meet the required criteria.

The student does not pass the test quizzes.

The student fails to capture any of the main points of a given text in their summary and the summary is very difficult to understand due to problems in grammar, syntax or spelling.

The student masters the contents of the course in a satisfactory way.

The student can read specialized texts using basic reading strategies.
The student has a poor active reading vocabulary.

The student can obtain information, ideas and opinions from specialized sources within his/her field, provided he/she can use a dictionary. The student can understand the main ideas of specialized articles outside his/her field.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student masters the contents of the course well.

The student can read with a certain degree of independence, adapting style and speed of reading to different texts and purposes.
The student has a good active reading vocabulary.

The student can obtain information, ideas and opinions from specialized sources within his/her field, provided he/she can use a dictionary to confirm his/her interpretation of terminology.
The student can understand the main ideas of specialized articles outside his/her field.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student masters the contents of the course in an excellent way.

The student can read with large degree of independence, adapting style and speed of reading to different texts and purposes.
The student has a broad active reading vocabulary.

The student can obtain information, ideas and opinions from highly specialized sources within his/her field.
The student can understand specialized articles outside his/her field, provided he/she can use a dictionary occasionally to confirm his/her interpretation of terminology.

Implementation and methods of teaching

100-prosenttinen verkkototeutus. HUOM. Päiväryhmä LLTILII23K ja muut päiväopiskelijat ilmoittautuvat omaan kurssitoteutukseen (3018-loppuinen). Opintojakso sisältää eri tavoin toteutettuja asiantuntijapuheenvuoroja/-kirjoituksia, tiedon etsintää sekä kontaktointia sidosryhmiin, esimerkiksi yrittäjiin ja potentiaalisiin asiakkaisiin. Palautettavia tehtäviä on kaksi: yksilötehtävä ja neljän hengen ryhmissä tehtävä harjoitustyö. Harjoitustyössä on kolme suoritusvaihtoehtoa: perinteinen raporttimuotoinen työ, BMC-muotoinen työ sekä liiketoimintasuunnitelma. Kurssilla hyödynnetään yhteistyömahdollisuudet StartHubin, Lahden Seudun Kehitys LADEC Oy:n ja yrittäjäjärjestöjen kanssa. Tervetuloa mukaan!

Kurssilla on viisi kontaktikertaa Zoomissa klo 17-18:
