Learning outcomes

Proficiency level B1

The student is able to
- communicate orally in different situations at the workplace
- use key telephone, customer service and meeting phrases
- write work-related e-mails

Implementation and methods of teaching

Online meetings, learning assignments, pair and group work as well as independent study

Timing and attendance

The course will start in week 36 and end in week 50.
Online lessons once a week (not in week 43).
Two online meetings in small groups, times agreed by the students.
Active participation in online lessons is required. Completing the course in independent study is not possible.
Mid-term test in the electronic system in weeks 43 and 44. Final exam in the electronic system in weeks 51 to 2/2025.

The learning assignments are related to communication in working life

Exam retakes

Retake of the mid-term test in weeks 48 and 49, retake of the final exam in weeks 6 and 7.

Learning environment

Moodle and Zoom
For the online meetings, the students will need a pc or a laptop, a web camera and a microphone. The online meetings will not be recorded.

Student time use and work load

5 ECTS means 135 hours of study.
Online meetings approx. 30 hours, independent study and group work approx. 100 hours

Contents

The students will practice the following oral and written communication situations in working life: telephone situations, e-mails, meetings, customer service and chatting with colleagues.

The students will practice the use of the conditional, and study the use of demonstrative pronouns and the pronoun joka and the passive voice.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

Prerequisites: Finnish for Work 1 and 2 or corresponding skills (approx. 20 ECTS Finnish language studies).
Proficiency level B1.

Assessment criteria

The learning assignments are graded on a scale of pass/fail.
The mid-term and final exams are to be taken in the electronic system Exam. They are graded on a scale of 0 to 5.

The student's message is not conveyed. The command of expressions typical of communication situations is very inadequate. The command of grammatical structures is not at the required skill level.

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student's message is not always conveyed in written and oral communication situations. The command of expressions typical of communication situations is insufficient. The student mainly uses simple structures.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student's message is mainly conveyed well in both written and oral communication situations. They know how to use expressions typical of communication situations quite well. The use of structures is quite fluent.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student's message is conveyed very well in both written and oral communication situations. They are able to use expressions typical of communication situations fluently. The use of structures is versatile and almost flawless.
