Learning outcomes

The student can
- present their own works to an audience of peers and evaluate them critically
- use different visual idealization methods
- use their observations and feelings as starting points for creative thinking
- compare the connections between visual arts and other visual culture
- analyze, interpret and explain the visual culture of our time.

Implementation and methods of teaching

The Visual Expression course introduces you to different processes of visual expression. Through exercises, students will be introduced to different methods of visual thinking, practice using their perceptions and emotions as a basis for creative thinking, and compare the links between the visual arts and other visual cultures.

During the course, the teacher will support the students in various exercises, independently, in pairs and in small groups. Time will also be set aside for group discussions.

Timing and attendance

Face-to-face tuition mainly Tue-Thu at the Fine Arts premises in Lappeenranta campus. The teacher will inform you in advance about the tasks to be carried out independently.

There will be two teaching groups.

- Less than 80% attendance in classes and teaching sessions
- Insufficient accomplishment of assignments
- Poor knowledge of the methods and related materials to be practised

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

- Can work according to instructions
- Can produce images and other visual outcomes based on their ideas in a guided way
- Can identify different ways of visual expression and image making and understand the working processes involved.
- Can participate in guided learning discussions
- Is able to search for professional information in his/her field

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

- Can apply a wide range of options to their working process
- Can produce images and visual outputs based on their ideas in a guided and independent manner and develop them on the basis of feedback
- Can independently identify and compare the main professional terminology and content used and apply it to their own expression
- Can evaluate and justify their skills and set artistic, content-related and technical development objectives
- Can follow and describe the professional discourse in their field
- Can present his/her own work to others, explain the content of the work and critically evaluate it

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

- Can apply and develop a variety of options in their working process
- Can use what they have learnt in a planned and creative way when producing images and other visual products and apply the feedback they receive
- Can apply the methods they use and analyse different solutions and works on the basis of the professional terminology and content they have learned during their studies
- Able to assess, develop and extend artistic, content-related and technical skills
- Be able to participate in professional debates in their field
- Can present and analyse their own works to others, explain their content and evaluate them critically
