Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- assess the suitability of different process models for assignments
- select the most appropriate process model to use in an assignment
- implement the stages of the chosen process model

Implementation and methods of teaching

Lectures, tasks, presentations and discussions. Feedback will be given on the last day.

Packaging design students: A case study.
Multidisciplinary product development group work
Team leader trainees can be chosen (can get extra credits)
Lectures, exam, and product development project including presentations and feedback sessions.

Timing and attendance

The schedule is in the course's Moodle environment. Obligatory presence on the first day, lectures and presentations. Commitment to the group work is essential. There is no need for additional tasks when absent but tasks have to do within given time.

Packaging design students: Own long schedule during the fall semester
Kick off and the preliminary task is mandatory
Mid and final presentations are mandatory (force major case like illness leads to an extra task)
80% attendance mandatory in contact days. Part of the group work days can be done as distance work but requires agreement and reporting to the group and the teacher.

Learning material and recommended literature

Learning materials and list of literature are in course's Moodle environment.

Alternative completion methods

Presented evidence of experience and learned skills e.g. in work life.

Packaging design students: Similar product development assignment in LAB projects or company collaboration. Requires a report including hours used, and a certificate of participation from the company or the project manager.

Working life cooperation

If possible the main task is a co-operation project.

Packaging design students: If possible, the product development project is conducted as a co-operation with a company.

Learning environment

Mukkulankatu campus and Moodle learning environment.

Packaging design students: Mukkulankatu campus project workspaces, Pc-room A260, workshops, co-working premises and Moodle learning environment. Possibly an excursion to a company. Evening workshop spaces can be booked for the groups if needed.

Student time use and work load

Tasks 65 %, lectures 10 %, literature ja learning tasks 10 %, presentations and discussions 15 %.

Packaging design students:

Contents

During the course we will find out the elements of graphic design product development processes and how to do it target orientated. The main task is to develop a product using graphic design methods and processes.

Packaging design students:
The course includes a multidisciplinary product development case, or a packaging field product development case that is related to LAB projects, company collaboration, or similar.
The case assignment includes a data collection and research part, concept design, and visualization of the chosen ideas based on the brief. The assignment is a group task. The project outcome includes a representative report.
The student gets a preliminary task in the field of study before the course starts.
Student deepens the group work skills, a dialogue in a group, dividing the project tasks between the group members, scheduling, project planning and project management.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

Basic studies of graphic design, art and typography. Basic skills of using vector graphics ja layout software, e.g. Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

Assessment criteria

Tasks 80 %, presentations and discussions 20 %.

Packaging design students:
Group work outcome and project management 50%
Student participation in the group for the common goal 30%
Exam 20%

Peer evaluation and self-evaluation may be used.

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

A1 Is able to consistently use the professional terminology of product development and argue actions using industry methods
B1 Is able to apply diversely learnt methods and processes
C3 Is able to act customer-orientated

Packaging design students:
- Can use the product development methods consistently and explain the actions through methods
- Can apply the learned methods and processes in various ways
- Can act the customer-driven way

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

A1 Is able to use broad-based the professional terminology of product development and communicate taking in consideration the target group
B1 Is able to choose suitable methods and processes for actions and argue the decisions.
C3 Is able to take appropriately in consideration the needs of the target group.

Packaging design students:
- Can use the product development methods in various ways and evaluate the suitability of different process models in his/her work.
- Can choose the most suitable process according to the assignment
- Can carry out the chosen process model according to the related steps and can describe them. Can take into account the needs of the user/project/client.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

A1 Is able to expertly use the professional processes of product development and based on those build a functional products of graphic design
B1 Is able to choose, combine and develop suitable methods and processes for actions
C3 Is able to take responsibility of the whole service process.

Packaging design students:
- Can use product design methods in a professional way and create a functional prototype
- Can choose, combine and develop suitable methods and processes according to own case.
- Can take full responsibility of the entity of the own process and report the process model in a professional way
