Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- use image editing software
- utilize icc-profile-based colour management in image production processes
- explain possibilities and limitations related to photographic image and image editing
- utilize image editing towards their expressional and content-related goals.

Implementation and methods of teaching

Teaching mainly by distance learning and self-study online. Distance learning can take place either on the premises of the institution or on your own computer. The school has powerful computers and the necessary software. For on-site learning, students must have headphones. It is the student's responsibility to find out which facilities and equipment are available at any given time. The course may include one day of face-to-face training on the use of printers, which will be announced separately. A day of face-to-face training may be replaced by distance learning.

If the student is studying remotely away from the school, he/she must have the appropriate hardware and software (Adobe Photoshop) The laptop trackpad cannot be used for studying, but requires either a mouse or a drawing pad. A drawing pad is the recommended purchase for the longer term and will be reviewed at the beginning of the section.

Timing and attendance

The course requires participation in class. There will be a lot of material every day, so absences are not recommended. The course can be completed partly independently via distance learning online. Course assignments and exams must be completed within the given timeframe. Students are expected to participate in the discussion sessions related to the visual assignment

Exam retakes

The course includes an exam, the time of which will be announced at the beginning of the course. If the student is unable to attend the exam on the actual exam day, the exam can be taken at a time to be announced.

Contents

The course teaches you how to use the features of Photoshop image editing software in a variety of ways, with the exception of 3D and video. In addition to using the software, you will learn concepts and terminology related to image editing and digital imaging. The course includes a visual assignment and an exam.

Assessment criteria

The course consists of a pictorial assignment, which is graded on a scale of 0-5. The course also includes an exam, which is also graded on a scale of 0-5. A pass mark of at least 1 is required for the exam, which means at least 50% correct answers.

Half of the total mark for the course will consist of the coursework and half of the exam mark. Attendance activities such as completing assignments on time and participating in discussions may raise or lower the grade by up to one point. Passing the course requires the successful completion of the course assignments.

An approved mark for the course (grades 1-5) requires an approved exam (at least grade 1) and an approved visual assignment (at least grade 1) according to the instructions.

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

Has a command of the terminology of image processing and digital imaging and demonstrates familiarity with the knowledge base in the field. Can apply the techniques/working methods and models/processes learnt in the realisation of a visual assignment.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

Can use key image processing and digital imaging terminology in a consistent manner. Can apply a wide range of techniques/working methods and models/processes and produce interesting visual work using them.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

Be able to use key image processing and digital imaging terminology in a versatile and competent manner. Can select and justify techniques/working methods and models/processes appropriate to the activity and produce visual work of considerable skill and interest using the techniques and working methods learnt.
