Student are able to use wider vocabulary, learn more about Chinese grammar, polish pronunciation, develop fluency in speaking, and improve listening comprehension, reading and writing skills.
Implementation and methods of teaching
This course is taught in class.
The teaching uses communicative and student-centred methods. New vocabulary and grammar are introduced through discussion in class, and practised by doing role plays. Assessment is done every lesson of areas needing clarification and practice; feedback is given regularly, and situations are created to help students clarify unclear areas and to further practise.
Timing and attendance
Periods 3-4 (Spring 2024)
Regular attendance expected.
Learning material and recommended literature
All material provided by the teacher in class.
Exam retakes
Regular short quizzes and tests throughout the course. All quizzes and tests done in class.

Dynamic classroom learning environment.
Student time use and work load
5 credits, equivalent to 125-150 hours of work, divided as follows:
• Lessons in class: 56 hours
• Homework and study of material taught: 69+ hours
Contents
Pronunciation will be further practised, fluency of speaking and the listening comprehension and writing skills will be worked on. Students will widen their vocabulary and knowledge of Chinese grammar so as to be able express opinions, ask for others’ viewpoints, ask for and give directions.
Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.
Chinese 1 and 2, or the equivalent of a two-semester elementary Chinese course (of about 24 weeks, 4 hours per week).
Assessment criteria
Continuous in-class assessment of pronunciation and speaking skills, plus class quizzes and tests that assess reading, writing and listening comprehension ability.

Approved/Failed
Assessment criteria: assessment scale failed/approved
Have learnt well everything taught in the course regarding pronunciation, reading, writing, speaking and listening: 60% pass mark in all quizzes and class tests, plus ability to pronounce sufficiently well so that the listener understands the utterances. Must also demonstrate satisfactory ability in conveying meaning intended in spoken situations.
