The course starts in week 44 and ends in week 51. The first meeting in week 44 is on campus. The second on-site meeting is in week 48. In the other weeks, meetings are in Zoom. Students will receive more detailed information about this by email. Weekly assignments and tests will be completed and checked independently, plus additional assignments with teacher feedback. The focus is on developing written and speaking skills through various exercises. Moodle exam in week 51. Date and time to be agreed with students. Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.
The course is targeted to students whose grade for English at matriculation exam was lower than C, or students who have not studied in senior high school (lukio) or whose level of English is below B1 according to the Common European Framework. The course is taught at level B1.2/B2.1. This course cannot be included in compulsory language studies. The instructions on Moodle are in Finnish.

Written assignments, tests and exam are completed successfully as specified by the teacher.

The student has insufficient knowledge of the course content. The spoken and written messages are not clear. Grammar has errors that hinder communication.
Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)
The student has a basic command of the course content. The student can communicate in writing; problems with grammar and vocabulary do not hinder communicating the main message. The student can speak in familiar everyday communication situations.
Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)
The student has a good command of the course content. The student can deliver messages clearly in writing; possible problems with grammar and vocabulary do not hinder communication. The student can also speak clearly in everyday communication situations.
Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)
The student has a comprehensive command of the course content. The student can deliver messages fluently and explicitly in writing, making occasional mistakes with grammar and vocabulary. The student can speak confidently and effortlessly in everyday communication situations.
