Learning outcomes

The student can
- tell about the stages of the history of photography, knowing how to relate them to the phenomena of each time, social and technological development
- places photographers in different eras in terms of stylistic history
- to acquire information on the history and research of photography
- produces an analytical text about the discussed topics.

Implementation and methods of teaching

The course consists of lectures, presentations, discussions, literature study and written assignments. During the course we will visit the Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki. At the end of the course there will be an exam.

Timing and attendance

Teaching once a week for 3-4 hours mainly at the campus.
80% attendance, otherwise additional tasks as assigned by the teacher.

Learning environment

he course is taught face-to-face and partly in a zoom.

Contents

We will go through the international and Finnish history of photography from the 19th century to the present day.
The history of photography in particular, but also other aspects of photography from photojournalism to fashion photography are present in the teaching.
The use of photographs and their expressive means are linked to the technological changes in the medium, but photographs also strongly reflect the social phenomena of their time. There is also a link between visual art styles, current debates in art theory and photography. The course aims to link the well-known names and images in the history of photography to these many connections, while also opening up a view of the future of photography in the digital world.
The course provides the photographer with an essential cultural knowledge base about his or her medium, a source of inspiration and a starting point for the written part of the thesis.

Note: Priority will be given to students in group MLTIVK24S, for whom the course is compulsory. However, the course is also open to Lappeenranta Fine Arts students.

Assessment criteria

Active participation in lessons. Successful completion of written and oral assignments. Passing the exam with distinction.

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student participation in classes and written assignments will demonstrate the student's knowledge of the major phenomena in the history of photography, the links and stylistic periods in the development of technique and expression, and well-known photographers.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

Active participation in class and written assignments demonstrate a good knowledge of the history of photography in terms of the technical and expressive development of the medium. The student will be able to identify the stylistic periods and their well-known representatives and to relate photographic phenomena to the social development and history of the period.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

Active participation in class and written assignments demonstrate an excellent knowledge of the history of photography in terms of the technical and expressive development of the medium. Students will identify periods of style and their well-known exponents with confidence, being able to relate them to the wider history of the visual arts. The student will be able to describe the phenomena of photography in the context of the social development and historical events of the period.
