Circular Economy RDI-projects is a virtual course.
The course consists of virtual lectures via zoom and independent project work either in pairs/ small groups or individually.

The student will learn the basic principles of Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) projects and how to apply them to real-life projects.
The student will understand the importance of networking in RDI projects.
The student will understand the steps for carrying out RDI projects and learn best practices for project reporting and documentation.

Required assignments/report are delivered during the course implementation and are adequate.

- explain key environmental cycles and assess bioeconomy strategies for sustainability
- describe the greenhouse effect and evaluate its role and impact on climate change
- summarize the history and impacts of climate change on human and ecological systems
- assess the environmental impacts of natural resource use and propose sustainable alternatives
- understand and apply strategies for carbon capture, storage, and climate adaptation across sectors
- understand how, especially SDGs 6,7,12,13 & 15, are linked to the course´s themes to promote more sustainable solutions

Toteutustapa ja opetusmenetelmät

This course, Climate Change & Sustainability, is part of the 15 ECTS module: Introduction to sustainable solutions engineering, containing three different courses which are implemented partly in parallel and integrated during the autumn semester. The main part of the theoretical content of the course is covered through a MOOC course with a similar name and content, which is integrated into the course´s Moodle. The course contains climate change and sustainability theory lectures, fieldwork, RDI project integration and team work.

The course/module will start in week 37, during which a more detailed course schedule and assignments will be presented. The Technical Cycle course consists of 3-4 full-day sessions, which may include excursions, projects, group work, and theoretical background. Attendance at the course's face-to-face teaching sessions is highly recommended; any absences must be agreed with the course's responsible teachers. Students can independently complete the MOOC course included in the course according to their own schedule

Half of the course workload (about 65 h) is allocated to completing the MOOC component of the course. There is approximately 20 h of contact teaching, the rest of the working time is allocated to group work and independent work. The more detailed plan and schedule will be given at the first meeting.

This course focuses on Climate Change and Sustainability. Its aim is to understand the causes of climate change, how to mitigate them and adapt to them through such things as urban planning and lifestyle changes.

Toteutustapa ja opetusmenetelmät

This course, Environmental Cycles and Sustainable Bioeconomy, is part of the 15 ECTS module: Introduction to sustainable solutions engineering, containing three different courses which are implemented partly in parallel and integrated during the autumn semester. The main part of the theoretical content of the course is covered through a MOOC course with a similar name and contents, which is integrated into the course´s Moodle. The course contains background lectures field work, integration in development projects project and team work.

The course/module will start in week 37, during which a more detailed course schedule and assignments will be presented. The Environmental Cycles and Sustainable Bioeconomy course consists of 3-4 full-day sessions, which may include excursions, projects, group work, and theoretical background. Attendance at the course's face-to-face teaching sessions is recommended; absences must be agreed with the course's responsible teachers. Students can independently complete the MOOC course included in the course according to their own schedule

Its aim is to highlight the importance of responsible production and consumption based on the principles of the circular economy. Toteutustapa ja opetusmenetelmät

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a virtual course.
Through this course, students will learn the introduction and definition of Environment Impact Assessment and the related policies and regulatory frameworks. Moreover, the EIA procedure, scoping & screening will be taught with different EIA methods, tools and techniques. Throughout different case examples, students will learn the EIA reporting, decision making and project management as well as the implementation and follow up of the EIA statements and reports.
Each session of the course includes group or individual assignments for better understanding and reviewing the topics that have been discussed in each session.
In addition there will be final project, including report and presentation, to pass this course.
A more detailed description of the teaching material and an introduction to the course will be provided during the lecture.

The Material Efficiency and Sustainable Materials course consists of:
- A virtual course part with lectures
- The GoLAB MOOC, which is completed independently
- Assignments, reports and presentations by students

The course includes topics on sustainable raw materials.
The course introduces material flow cost accounting (MFCA) and principles of material efficiency auditing in companies.
Recycled and renewable materials circulation will be looked with the concept of industrial symbiosis.

The course observes the basic tools used in project management such as stakeholder analysis, project charter, WBS, time scheduling methods, and resource planning. Also, risk analysis and risk management tools are introduced.

Toteutustapa ja opetusmenetelmät

Quality management systems course is a virtual course. Students will learn the requirements for Quality management systems according to ISO 19001, how to audit a QMS, how to implement a QMS, and finally how to plan and report the audits. Case examples will help the students to understand better of the course content.
Each session of the course includes lectures and also individual assignments for better understanding and reviewing the topics that have been discussed.
In addition, there will be a final project to pass this course, which will be done in groups of 3-4 students.
A more detailed description of the teaching material and an introduction to the course will be provided during the first session.

Toteutustapa ja opetusmenetelmät

Sustainability reporting is a virtual course through which students will learn what is included in the reports of companies. What regulations companies should follow in writing their reports. What are the best practices and what are the challenges. Throughout different case examples, students will learn the different companies' strategies towards sustainability, decision making as well as the implementation and follow up the reports.
Each session of the course includes group work and assignments for better understanding and reviewing the topics that have been discussed.
In addition there will be individual assignments to pass this course.
The individual and group work assignments counts 40% of the final grade.
The final project is 50% of the final grade and is done in the group of 4-5 students.
More detailed description of the teaching material will be provided in the introduction of the first session.

Sisältö

Sustainable water management is also an important part of the Sustainable Development Goals and Circular Economy, which will be the integrated and holistic approaches of this course. This course introduces the importance of the hydrological systems in a local and global levels. During the course also human impacts (including climate change) of hydrological cycles are discussed as well as the methods and technologies to minimize detrimental effects especially concentrated to wastewater and sludge treatment.

Osaamistavoitteet

The student is able to
- explain the role of technical and material cycles in supporting a circular economy
- evaluate responsible production and consumption practices for resources
- assess the impacts of sustainable and non-sustainable production on issues like pollution, climate change, and resource and nature depletion
- apply principles of circular economy to product and process design, with examples of circular models
- identify key policies and regulations that drive circular business development in various industries
- understand how, especially SDGs 9,12,13 & 15, are linked to the course´s themes to promote more sustainable solutions

Toteutustapa ja opetusmenetelmät

This course, Technical Cycles, is part of the 15 ECTS module: Introduction to sustainable solutions engineering, containing three different courses which are implemented partly in parallel and integrated during the autumn semester. The main part of the theoretical content of the course is covered through a MOOC course with a similar name and contents, which is integrated into the course´s Moodle. The course contains an excursion, an applied ecodesign project, team work and reading club sessions.

Ajoitus ja läsnäolo

The course/module will start in week 37, during which a more detailed course schedule and assignments will be presented. The Technical Cycles course consists of 3-4 full-day sessions, which may include excursions, projects, group work, and theoretical background. Attendance at the course's face-to-face teaching sessions is recommended; absences must be agreed with the course's responsible teachers. Students can independently complete the MOOC course included in the course according to their own schedule.

Most part of the materials will be achievable online and delivered in Moodle.

Opiskelijan ajankäyttö ja kuormitus

Half of the course workload (about 65 h) is allocated to completing the MOOC component of the course. There is approximately 20 h of contact teaching, the rest of the working time is allocated to group work and independent work. The more detailed plan and schedule will be given at the first meeting.

Sisältö

This course focuses on technical and material cycles, especially non-renewable natural resources. It aim is to highlight the importance of responsible production and consumption, based on the principles of the circular economy. Also the principles of sustainable value chains, design and examples of circular economy models will become familiar during the course.
