Implementation and methods of teaching

The course is organised each year with different content.

Artist's book, creative publication

This course opens up a range of possibilities for how paper-based work, whether it is material produced by printmaking, drawing or various exposure methods, can find its way into an artist's book or creative publication. The material will be worked with a method/combinations of methods with which the student is already familiar and which the student can use independently.

In the course of the course, the student will learn basic skills in paper handling, gluing different materials, the basics of Western bookbinding and will be introduced to Japanese binding patterns. The course is built around bookbinding demonstrations and practical work, and provides the basic skills for independent work in the field of bookbinding. In addition, paper-based work and the concept of the artist's book will be introduced through lectures. The course ends with a joint final presentation in which participation is compulsory.

Timing and attendance

The course is organised each year with different content. The basic studies in printmaking must have been completed.

The course is divided into three parts:

-The introductory part of the course introduces the basic skills of paper handling, gluing different materials and the basics of Western bookbinding. The session is taught in four days of intensive study and requires attendance at each day of classroom instruction.

-The second two-week period of the course focuses on working on material suitable for creative publishing. The material will be produced using a method/combinations of methods with which the student is already familiar and which the student can use independently. During the two weeks, the student will have the opportunity to attend art supervision sessions and remote consultation on book binding.

-In the final phase of the course, the student will start working on a creative publication from the material worked on during the previous two weeks. The final stage is a four-day intensive course, requiring attendance at each day of face-to-face teaching.The course ends with a joint final presentation in which participation is compulsory.

Alternative completion methods

The course cannot be taken remotely.

Exam retakes

If a student does not receive a pass in a course, he or she must take it again the following year.

Student time use and work load

The extent of the course is 5 credits. Study takes place Tue-Fri from 9am to 4pm (1 credit means 27 hours of work).To pass the course, 100% attendance is required for the four-day opening period and the four-day closing period of the course. In addition, successful completion requires attendance at the final presentation, successful completion of assignments, and attendance at lectures and technique demos.

Contents

Artist's book, creative publication

This course is offered annually with different content and is designed to deepen your knowledge of printmaking and paper-based work.

You must have completed the basic studies in printmaking. The course will deepen the student's knowledge of printmaking and paper-based work and will use methods that are already familiar to the student and that the student can use independently.

Failure to complete:
- repeated absences from lessons and teaching situations
- significant failure to meet the learning objectives
- incomplete completion of assignments
- poor knowledge of the bookbinding methods and related materials involved
- disregard for workshop instructions and safety at work
- non-attendance at final discussions and lectures

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

- Can work according to instructions
- Can produce ideas for a creative publication and carry out the work using paper-based methods
- Can identify in a guided way the specific features of bookbinding and paper-based work and understand the work processes involved.

- Can apply a wide range of options to their artistic practice
- Can produce a creative publication based on their ideas in a guided and independent way and develop it on the basis of feedback received
- Can independently identify and compare the characteristics of bookbinding and paper-based work and understand the work processes involved.
- Can evaluate and justify their skills and set artistic, content and technical development objectives
- Able to monitor and describe the professional debate in their field

- Can apply and develop a wide range of options when making a creative publication..
- Can use what they have learned in a planned and creative way when producing a creative publication and apply the feedback they receive
- Can apply the principles of bookbinding in their work and analyse their decisions
- Can evaluate, develop and extend artistic, content and technical skills
- Participate in professional debates in their field
