Learning outcomes
The student is able to
- communicate in most common everyday situations
- understand slowly and clearly spoken Finnish when the topic and the vocabulary are familiar
- understand and write a simple message or text
- use the basic vocabulary and some grammatical structures of Finnish.

Implementation and methods of teaching
Meetings at Lappeenranta campus and independent studying. Contents of the course are studied mainly with functional exercises.
Timing and attendance
The course is completed in one period, in October - December 2025. 2 lessons per week. A minimum of 75 % attendance and active participation is required. If a student is not on the course during the first 2 weeks and does not report their absence, they will be withdrawn from the course.

Materials given by the teacher. The material is in Moodle.
Exams
Written exam in Exam Room (11.12.2025 - 4.1.2026, own choice), section exams in Moodle (deadline 11.12.2025) and oral exam if necessary. Retake in Exam Room (12. - 19.1.2026). NOTE! If student wants his/her grade during the calendar year 2025, must written exam in Exam Room taken latest 17.12.2025.

Contents
The course content will be the following:
- pronunciation
- telling about one’s everyday life
- weather, seasons, months
- time expressions, clock times, days of week
- food and drink
- shopping, restaurant and café
- partitive case
- verb types 1–5 and present tense (and basics from K, P, T variation in verbs).
Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.
Finnish 1 -course or equivalent skills.
Assessment criteria
A written and oral exam to evaluate, how well the student can
- write in Finnish
- understand Finnish texts
- understand Finnish talk
- speak in Finnish.
