Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- apply visual thinking and expression, and demonstrate understanding of the basics of pictorial thinking and color theory in painting
- use different painting methods in their work
- prepare a canvas or panel for painting and understand the working culture of painting
- use materials appropriately and in an environmentally friendly manner
- identify options and select materials, and evaluate and calculate their acquisition and production costs.

Implementation and methods of teaching

Teaching takes place at the Lahti campus mainly from 9-16 from Tuesday to Thursday. Students are expected to be present also on Fridays by independent studying. Some assignments may also be completed on your own outside these times. Teaching includes exercises, lectures and feedback discussions.

Timing and attendance

The course cannot be carried out remotely.
Attendance 80%.

Teaching takes place face-to-face at the Lahti campus. The teaching includes exercises, lectures and feedback discussions.

Moodle is used for information during the course.

Contents

Basics of Painting introduces the student to the working practices of painting and the basics of painterly thinking.

The course develops visual and conceptual thinking in painting and explores its basic elements. Exercises are based on themes such as colour, perception and materiality. The aim is also to outline the expression of painting that emerges from one's own starting points. The course will use acrylic and oil paints and explore the basics of these techniques.

The course includes exercises, lectures, material theory and feedback discussions.
