Learning outcomes

The student
- masters elementary school mathematics
- is able to use calculators, word processing and spreadsheets in studies
- identify the mathematical competence needed in the professional subjects

Implementation and methods of teaching

Do you find math challenging, but would be interested in improving your skills. Now you can study independently mathematical subjects at your own pace and in plain language! The course is aimed at upper secondary level students and graduates, as well as others planning to continue their studies, such as the unemployed and immigrants, as well as anyone interested in developing mathematical skills.

The online course utilises good practices from different learning methods, and the material in the online section consists of pedagogically scripted instructional videos as well as interactive teaching material and assignments.

The course is an online course that can be studied independently. The course offers the opportunity to receive support for learning during separately announced survey times.

Learning material and recommended literature

All the necessary material and information can be found in the course.

Contents

1. Study skills (spreadsheets, word processing, calculator use, importance of self-interest)
2. Mathematics: numbers, order of calculation, power calculations, sum expressions, 1st degree equation, percentages, SI system, absolute value, roots, basics of geometry, graphs and tables, logical thinking)
3. Computational competence required in the professional field: separate packages of calculations required in the tourism and hospitality sector, business administration, social and health care sector and technology

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

The course cannot be directly utilized for university of applied sciences studies. This course cannot be used as replacement for Introduction into Mathematics.
