Learning outcomes

The student is able to:
- deepen the previously acquired knowledge in some special area within health care or acquires new knowledge in some special area within health care
- apply the previously acquired theoretical knowledge in clinical placement setting
- work as a part of multiprofessional team

Implementation and methods of teaching

Internship includes:
5–10 ECTS of clinical practice in a healthcare unit chosen by the student.

The clinical placement must be approved by the clinical practice coordinator.


During the clinical practice period, the student:deepens previously acquired knowledge in a specific area of healthcare or acquires new knowledge in a specialized area of healthcare.
Applies previously acquired theoretical knowledge in a clinical setting.
Works effectively as part of a multiprofessional team.

Learning material and recommended literature

Literature related to the chosen nursing field, as well as resarch based articles and current clinical guidelines (Käypä-hoitosuositukset)

Exam retakes

A failed clinical practice must be completed. During the assessment, it will be determined how many weeks the student has completed before the interruption and how many additional weeks are required to achieve a passing grade.

Learning environment

Internship in clinical nursing settings.

Student time use and work load

Minimum of 135 hours of clinical practice (1 ects = 27 hours of work)

Prerequisites:
Clinical training in basics of nursing, Clinical training self-care supporting nursing, Clinical training in Medical-surgical nursing 1-2, Clinical training in Mental health and substance abuse nursing, Clinical training in Child, Adolescent and Family Nursing, Clinical training in Gerontological Nursing
Theoretical basic studies and professional studies,
Medical calculations approved according to schedule

Assessment criteria

Criteria for approved clinical practice:
The objectives for clinical practice have been reached (evaluated by student, teacher and clinical supervisor)
The evaluation is documented in evaluation form
The given assignments have been done according to guidelines and returned by deadline
The replacements of possible absences from clinical practice have been done
The student takes responsibility in progression of the clinical practice (objectives during the first week and making sure that evaluation discussions are held)

Criteria for not approved clinical practice:
The student does not reach the general and own learning objectives of the practice period
Unethical behaviour towards a patient or workplace and colleagues
Actions that endanger patient safety
Lack of workplace skills
The student is not capable of taking responsibility of own studies and learning
