Learning outcomes
The student is able to
- identify and use the course vocabulary and phrases for common everyday situations
- tell about oneself and understand basic questions
- read and write simple sentences related to the course topics.

Implementation and methods of teaching
Meetings at Lappeenranta campus and independent studying. Contents of the course are studied mainly with functional exercises.
Timing and attendance
The course is completed in one period, in September - October 2025. 2 - 3 lessons per week. No lessons during the week 38. A minimum of 75 % attendance and active participation is required. If a student is not on the course during the first 2 weeks and does not report their absence, they will be withdrawn from the course.
Material
Materials given by the teacher. The material is in Moodle.
Exams
Written exam in Exam Room (16. - 28.10.2025, own choice), section exams in Moodle (deadline 16.10.2025) and oral exam if necessary. Retake in Exam Room (3. - 16.11.2025).

Contents
The course content will be the following:
- greetings, some phrases
- introduction, personal details and telling about the family
- questions and answers
- numbers and alphabet
- pronunciation
- countries, languages, nationalities
- I have structure
- verb type 1, present tense
- genitive case.
Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.
No previous Finnish skills required.
Assessment criteria
A written and oral exams to evaluate, how well the student can
- write in Finnish
- understand Finnish texts
- understand Finnish talk and
- speak in Finnish.
