A student is able to
- prepare materials for and deliver presentations confidently and effectively in front of an audience
- perform in other public speaking situations at work
- promote business and personal brands
- manage personal branding and networking through various media.

Toteutustapa ja opetusmenetelmät

The course will consist of lessons on campus as well as online coursework.

Methods of delivering the course will vary, and could contain a mix of the following:
- Lectures
- Discussions
- Group work
- Individual work
- Peer and self-assessment

Ajoitus ja läsnäolo

All lessons for the course will be held on campus. There will be 1 x 2 hour lesson roughly every second week, except for the spring break week (calendar week 9).

It is possible that work relating to assignments will take place in the lessons. Replacement activities will not be provided for those students who cannot attend lessons.

In the case that the course cannot be held on campus, lessons will be held online via Zoom. Students will be notified of this change by the course lecturer if this occurs.

Oppimateriaali ja suositeltava kirjallisuus

All learning materials will be provided by the teacher in lessons and online through Moodle. However, at times student research will be used to inform class discussion. In this case guidelines will be provided.

There are no alternative completion methods for this course.

The course is not directly connected with student working life. However, throughout the course their is a concerted different to promote and connect students with their career field and relevant networks.

There are no exams provided in this course. Continuous learning is used as the form of assessment and, as a result, there are not exams provided.

Opiskelijan ajankäyttö ja kuormitus

The estimated workload for students is 135 hours. This includes attending lessons, all coursework. preparatory exercises and assignments.

Sisältö

The course has two focuses. The first is to support students and equip them to promote themself in their chosen career. The second focus it to develop confidence and ability in presenting/communicating idea in the form of presentations. The following topics will be included

Topics:
- personal branding and self-promotion
- LinkedIn and pitching
- networking
- different forms of presentations (both face-to-face and online). These include impromptu presenting, video, agendas in meetings and pitching ideas
- stage craft - non-verbals, voice and delivery, movement and digital body language

Lisätietoja opiskelijalle: mm. edeltävä osaaminen

The course is taught at skill level CEFR B2. If you have concerns about the level of your language skills, you should discuss this with the course lecturer prior to the beginning of the course.

If you have previous studies or work experience that you feel is equivalent to this course, then you should contact the course lecturer via email prior to the beginning of the course to discuss applying for Recognition of Prior Learning.

Arviointimenetelmät

All compulsory assignments must be completed by the given deadlines. Any concerns about completing coursework by the given deadlines should be discussed with the teacher in advance of assignment deadlines.

A mix of assessment methods are used in this course including peer-assessment, summative and formative assessment.
You will be required to complete both Pass/fail and graded (0-5) assessment tasks. Further, completion of other coursework will also contribute to the final course grade.

More information on specific assignments will be provided when the course commences.

The student has satisfactory knowledge of the course content.

The speech is understandable with some difficulty to follow. Interaction is mostly missing. The speech is hesitant, pauses are rather long and pronunciation mistakes sometimes make it hard to understand the message. The student uses only basic structures and makes some mistakes.

The student is able to give basic presentations in English. The student has not fully reached the professional standard required to present and promote themselves in professional settings.

Written communication consists of simple expressions and there are plentiful mistakes. The language is clumsy, but the message is delivered.

Arviointikriteerit: taso 3 (arviointiasteikko 1-5)

The student has a good knowledge of the course content.

The student communicates in English well, interacts adequately, and uses means of nonverbal communication. The speech is fairly easy to follow. The speech is fluent and clear, but pauses, hesitations, and pronunciation mistakes may occur.

The student is able to give professional and coherent presentations in English. The student is able to apply the acquired skills in professional settings in English.

Written communication is quite fluent, clear, and mostly correct. The structures and professional vocabulary are adequate to deliver the message. Minor mistakes occur concerning the genre and/or style.

Arviointikriteerit: taso 5 (arviointiasteikko 1-5)

The student has an excellent knowledge of the course content.

The student communicates in excellent English. Interaction is very skillful, and nonverbal communication effectively supports spoken words. The speech is targeted, extremely logical, relevant, and consistent. The speech (language, pronunciation and intonation) is fluent, clear, accurate, and naturally paced.

The student is able to give professional, coherent, and fluent presentations in English. The student has found their own personal style in promoting themselves professionally and is keenly aware for the importance of audience when presenting ideas.

Written communication is very fluent and versatile. The student uses varied structures and extensive professional vocabulary, making occasional mistakes only in the most complex structures. The student can deliver the message effortlessly in the appropriate, genre-specific style.
