Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- explain the meaning and mechanism of the musculoskeletal diseases and disorders in the origin of the symptoms and diseases
- examine and draw conclusions on the impacts that the musculoskeletal diseases and disorders have on the functional ability
- select evidence-based physiotherapy methods in supporting the well-being of the client's musculoskeletal system
- compile and guide individual exercises and self-care to support the client's functional ability

Implementation and methods of teaching

Exercises on campus, online work independently and in groups, individual and group assignments.

The campus exercises include and emphasizes the study of the musculoskeletal system, manual therapy and therapeutic training. The course requires active independent study and preparation for practice classes with the support of the course literature (Kauranen, Tarnanen & Holopainen and Good treatment recommendations) and Moodle materials.

On weeks 2-22. Orientation meeting in zoom on week 2.
Attendance 100% in practice classes is needeed.

Student time use and work load

The student's total workload is 7 credits x 27 h = 189 h.

Contents

- Studying the most common musculoskeletal dysfunctions and disorders. Understanding the kinesiology behind the disorders (neck, shoulder and shoulder-circle, elbow, wrist, hand, chest, back, hip-circle and SI joint, hip, knee, foot, ankle)
- Development of dysfunction, functional anatomy and clinical reasoning. Planning and implementation of physical therapy that supports functional capacity.
- Applying the laws of training, taking into account the condition of the tissues. Self-care guidance.
- Musculoskeletal diseases
- Realization of the treatment chain and the organization of follow-up care

Anatomy and palpation of the musculoskeletal system 5 credits
Assessment and manual handling of soft tissues 5 credits
Basics of mobilization and stabilization 4 credits

Assessment criteria

Self and peer assessment, teacher assessment

1. Participation in face-to-face teaching 100%. Continuous display during training sessions.
2. Body part quizzes in Moodle (structural and functional anatomy, come-and-go diseases, Current Treatment) (pass-full) Must be passed with approval to participate in the competency test. Take advantage of the progress monitoring.
3. Application of therapeutic exercise research information in the exercise class (pass-failed)
4. Management of theoretical knowledge in EXAM online exams 2 pcs, (5-0)
- lower limb and pelvic girdle EXAM week 12-15
- th and c spine, upper extremity EXAM week 21-23

5. Demonstration of practical research and therapy skills week 22 (5-0)
6. Practice tasks online and on campus (pass-full)

- list diseases and dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system
- describe and illustrate methods suitable for studying the musculoskeletal system
- make use of literature and researches on musculoskeletal physiotherapy
- to plan the progression of physiotherapy and a therapeutic training program for functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student can:
- explain the meaning of diseases and dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system and the mechanism in the origin of symptoms and diseases
- reliably describe and illustrate methods suitable for examining the musculoskeletal system and connect them to the client's ability to function
- make use of literature and researches on physiotherapy of the musculoskeletal system
- to plan and evaluate the progression of physiotherapy and a therapeutic exercise program for functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system according to the ICF model

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student can:
-explains the meaning and mechanism of diseases and dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system in a comprehensive manner in the origin of symptoms and diseases
- describe, illustrate and evaluate methods suitable for examining the musculoskeletal system in a versatile and reliable manner and understand their importance in terms of the client's ability to function
- interpret and compare researches on musculoskeletal physiotherapy and draw conclusions and apply knowledge in clinical work
- plan and evaluate individually the progress of physiotherapy, therapeutic exercise program and self-care for musculoskeletal disorders, taking into account the client's functional capacity in accordance with the ICF model
