Learning outcomes
The student is able to
- communicate in many common everyday situations
- understand slowly and clearly spoken Finnish when the topic and the vocabulary are familiar
- understand and write a simple message or text
- use the basic vocabulary and some grammatical structures of Finnish.

Online lessons (in Zoom), independent work and an exam.
Timing and presence
Lessons in Zoom in the spring semester 2025, term: 13th January – 28th March 2025, on Wednesdays at 16:15 – 17:45 and on Fridays at 8:15 – 9:45. No lessons on week 9. Total of 20 meetings. Schedule is in Moodle platform when course begins. Active participation is required (min. 50%).

Suomen mestari 1: Gehring, S. & Heinzman, S. 2020. Suomen mestari 1. uudistettu painos. Helsinki: Otava. Chapters 4–6. Additional material provided by the teacher in Moodle.

Approximately 81 hours (meetings + independent studying).
Contents
The course content will be the following:
- telling about one’s everyday life
- home and living
- food and drinks
- travelling
- time expressions
- verb types 1–5
- local cases.

Survival Finnish for the Staff or equivalent skills (Suomen mestari 1, chapters 1 - 3).

Continuous assessment, assignments and final test.
