Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- use basic grammar sufficiently well to manage in professional language studies
- use English in everyday situations
- discuss and write about familiar topics.

Implementation and methods of teaching

Blended learning.

Timing and attendance

The course starts in week 44 and ends in week 51. The first meeting in week 44 is on campus. The second on-site meeting is in week 48. In the other weeks, meetings are in Zoom. Students will receive more detailed information about this by email. Weekly assignments and tests will be completed and checked independently, plus additional assignments with teacher feedback. The focus is on developing written and speaking skills through various exercises. Moodle exam in week 51. Date and time to be agreed with students. All instructions for the assignments are in Finnish.

Learning material and recommended literature

Material is provided by the teacher on on-campus days, as well as self-study materials and assignments on Moodle.

Blended learning in class and Zoom.

Contents

- revision of essential grammar: verbs, nouns, sentence structure, adjectives and prepositions.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

The course is targeted to students whose grade for English at matriculation exam was lower than C, or students who have not studied in senior high school (lukio) or whose level of English is below B1 according to the Common European Framework. The course is taught at level B1.2/B2.1. This course cannot be included in compulsory language studies. The instructions on Moodle are in Finnish.

Assessment criteria

Written and oral assignments, tests and a Moodle exam are to be completed successfully as specified by the teacher.

The student has a good command of the course content. The student can deliver everyday messages clearly in writing; possible problems with grammar and vocabulary do not hinder communication.
