Implementation and methods of teaching

This course is taught in class.
The teaching uses the communicative approach. New vocabulary and grammar are introduced through discussion in class, and practised by doing role plays. Assessment of areas needing clarification and practice is done every lesson; feedback is given regularly, and exercises created to clarify and to further practise.

All material provided by the teacher in class.

Dynamic and collaborative classroom learning environment that provides lots of opportunities to practise the material discussed.

Student time use and work load

4 credits, equivalent to 100-120 hours of work, divided as follows:
• Lessons in class: 56 hours
• Homework and study of material taught: 44+ hours

Contents

Pronunciation will be further practised, and fluency of speaking will also be worked on. Students will widen their vocabulary and knowledge of Chinese grammar so as to be able to discuss one’s likes and dislikes, buy and sell things, and talk about one’s friends and family.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

Chinese 1 and 2, or equivalent one-semester elementary Chinese course (of about 12 weeks, 4 hours per week).

Assessment criteria

Continuous assessment of pronunciation and speaking skills, plus class quizzes and tests that test reading, writing and listening comprehension ability.

Students
• are able to pronounce most of the sounds of spoken Chinese sufficiently well so as to be understood.
• have learnt in a satisfactory manner the vocabulary taught so as to be able to read and write the characters.
• are able to use some of the grammar structures taught in writing and in speaking.
• are able to understand some basic spoken Chinese.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

Students
• are able to pronounce the sounds of spoken Chinese sufficiently well so as to be understood.
• have learnt well enough the vocabulary taught so as to be able to read and write the characters.
• are able to use the grammar structures taught in writing and in speaking.
• are able to understand basic spoken Chinese.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

Students
• are able to pronounce the sounds of spoken Chinese in an excellent manner.
• have learnt very well the vocabulary taught and are able to read and write the characters.
• are able to use very well the grammar structures taught in writing and in speaking.
• are able to understand basic spoken Chinese very well.
