Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- identify and use the course vocabulary and phrases for common everyday situations
- tell about oneself and understand basic questions
- read and write simple sentences related to the course topics.

Implementation and methods of teaching

Suomi with Love 1 is an online elementary course of Finnish language. Suomi with Love 1 is an independent study course, provided on Moodle and it has maximum a few meetings on Zoom. The final exam will be held on Zoom. You can register for the course until 6 November 2024.

Timing and attendance

The course must be completed during one semester. The course schedule will be announced on Moodle.

Learning material and recommended literature

All the material is online, mostly on Moodle. To complete the course you will need a working computer with a working microphone and camera and sufficient internet access.

Learning environment

The course is on Moodle and has maximum few meetings on Zoom. The final exam is on Zoom.

Student time use and work load

The course is 3 ECT, equivalent to about 81 hours of work.

The course content will be the following:
- greetings
- introduction and personal details
- questions and answers
- numbers and alphabet
- at the café
- countries, languages, nationalities
- pronunciation
- verb type 1, present tense
- genitive case
- to have

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

No previous Finnish skills required.

Assessment criteria

The course includes a number of assessed tasks (in Moodle) and a final oral exam (in Zoom).

Student

- can correctly answer to few questions from the text
- can write few sentences in Finnish.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

- recognizes the most common phrases
- understands the most common questions and can answer them
- can introduce herself/himself and tell something about her/his everyday life
- can correctly answer to some questions from the text
- can write a short text in Finnish.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student
- recognizes all or almost all the phrases
- understands all or almost all the questions and can answer them
- can introduce herself/himself and tell several things about her/his everyday life
- can correctly answer to all or almost all questions from the text
- can write a short logical and functional text in Finnish.
