Learning outcomes

Students are able to
-communicate clearly and effectively in different generic and field-specific studying situations both orally and in writing
-find, evaluate and use information effectively
-function collaboratively in Finnish university culture.

Implementation and methods of teaching

The course is for the first-year students only. It is taught in Lahti mainly in class (2 x 2 lessons per week for 13 weeks) and based on face-to-face interaction.

Timing and attendance

75% of the lessons with active participation.

Contents

Finnish university and work culture
- understanding the key terminology, current topics and concepts of the engineering field (activities include participating in meetings, discussions, presentations, process descriptions)
- managing written and oral communication situations required in professional studies and at work: correct/appropriate use of language (grammar, formal vs. informal style)
- recognizing and applying the different sources and tools to help students improve their English skills
- managing job application processes (CV, video application, job interview).

TThe course is taught at a B1 (-B2) level according to the Common European Framework.

The student has insufficient knowledge of the course content. The spoken and written messages are not clear. The grammar has errors that unfortunately hinder communication greatly.

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student has a basic command of the course content. The student can understand the main points of familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. The problems with grammar and vocabulary are present but although they may hinder communication, the main message is still clear. The student can speak in familiar everyday communication situations.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student has a good command of the course content. The student can deliver messages clearly in writing; possible problems with grammar and vocabulary do not hinder communication. The student can speak relatively clearly in everyday communication situations.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student has a comprehensive command of the course content. The student can deliver messages quite fluently and explicitly in writing, making only occasional mistakes with simple grammar and vocabulary. The student can speak confidently and effortlessly in everyday communication situations.
