Learning outcomes
The student is able to
- describe the field of occupational health care and the labor legislation regulating it
- analyze the working environment, its workload factors and an employee's workload, as well as produce a workplace survey report with improvement suggestions
- recognize and prevent the risk factors of occupational diseases and the employees' rehabilitation needs, and carry out activity that promotes and maintains working capacity
- work according to the good physiotherapy practices in multi-professional teams and in cooperation with the employee and the workplace
Implementation and methods of teaching
The course is implemented jointly by Lahti and Lappeenranta. In addition, the course is partly organized multi-professionally with health nursing students, so that starting from the basic studies, the multi-professional way of working in occupational health care becomes familiar. The study includes independent and small group work online, group work on campus and in working life cooperation, and joint Zoom meetings.
Timing and attendance
The study period is scheduled for weeks 2-21/2024.
Acceptance of the course requires active participation in the implementation.
Learning material and recommended literature
It will be announced on the Moodle pages of the course. No required literature to be acquired.
Working life cooperation
During the study period, we work together a lot, e.g. tasks are done in small groups, different work environments are analyzed - a job survey is made. Information provision, guidance and counseling (TANO activity), health check-up plan, assessment of work ability and health plan are applied to these.
Exam retakes
Failed proficiency tests of the study course can be repeated twice. A person who does not participate in team tasks will have to make up for his absence.
Learning environment
The course is implemented on campuses and online (Zoom, Moodle).

The scope of the course is 5 credits, which means 135 hours of student work.

Occupational health care, multiprofessionalism, operating environment of occupational health care and legislation related to occupational health care (+ qualification to work in occupational health care)
Occupational health and safety
Work-related (musculo-skceletal) diseases (occupational medicine)
Ergonomics
Workplace survey (methods and exposures to work load factors) and action plan
Health check-up, assessment of work ability and health plan
Work capacity management, monitoring and early support
Health behavior of working-age people and TANO (information, guidance and counseling)

Physiotherapy and Therapeutic Exercise for the Musculoskeletal System 7 credits
Promotion of Health, Health Enhancing Physical Activity and Adapted Sports 5 credits
The development of competence is supported by semesters 1-4. study courses.

Advance assignment in Moodle (pass-fail) DL before the start of the course
Occupational safety and health's Test your knowledge test (pass/fail)
Work-related diseases and work-related TULE diseases competence test (5-0) 25% weighting
Ergonomics proficiency test (5-0) 25% weighting when calculating the course grade

The student has not passed the competency tests of the course and/or the student has not participated in team tasks. The student has a lot of absences from teaching situations.
Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)
The student knows about the field of occupational health care and the legislation that regulates it. He recognizes some of the stress factors in the work environment and knows the main features of the job search process. The student identifies some risk factors for work-related diseases and the rehabilitation needs of employees. He knows the importance of multi-professionalism in occupational health care.
Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)
The student can describe the field of occupational health care and the legislation that regulates it. He knows how to analyze the work environment, related load factors and the employee's load. He knows the main features of the job search process and can give some suggestions for measures. He knows how to identify and prevent the most common risk factors for work-related diseases and the rehabilitation needs of employees. He knows how to plan activities that promote and maintain work ability. The student understands the importance of multiprofessionalism in occupational health care and strives for a multiprofessional way of working.
Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)
The student can describe the field of occupational health care and the legislation that regulates it, and apply these to their own activities. He knows how to thoroughly analyze the work environment, related load factors and the employee's load. The student masters the principles of the job search process, and has the skills to participate in the job search and give reasoned action proposals as part of the job search process. The student knows how to identify and prevent risk factors for work-related diseases. He knows how to recognize the rehabilitation needs of employees. The student knows how to plan activities that promote and maintain work ability based on needs and justified. The student understands the importance of multiprofessionalism in occupational health care and uses multiprofessionalism in his own activities.
