Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student should be able to:
- Understand the main features of urban history and its impacts in contemporary envi-ronment as well as understand the key elements of local identity
- Critically analyze and discuss contemporary phenomena like urbanization and ur-ban sprawl, transitions in urban areas and collaboration of professionals and stake-holders
- Evaluate recent urban development and planning processes and their management
- Discuss and apply key methodologies of public participation in the planning and de-velopment processes
- Develop applications from theoretical background into practical situations
Implementation and methods of teaching
The module is part of MUrCS programme and carried out according to a separate module handbook available in GCULearn (eLearning platform in Glasgow Caledonian University). The module is available only for MUrCS students. The implementation is by LAB and Glasgow Caledonian University.

Contents
The module concentrates on the field of urban planning and development in different urban and cultural contexts. The main goal is to understand the impacts of urbanisation in different parts of the world. Also the module introduces shortly the main features of urban histo-ry and introduces examples of transition processes in urban areas. Questions of different roles in planning processes are discussed, as well as examples of different planning systems and practises. The impact of participation in planning and development processes is an important issue which can be demonstrated with the help of different case studies and practises. Theoretical approach to urban planning is introduced. The management of urban development processes provides a challenge to all developing cities and it will be introduced by several case studies.
