Learning outcomes

The student knows:
- the main methods of management and regulation in the field
- how to emphasise the impact of circular economy as part of sustainable waste management solutions
- how to identify key emission sources that cause soil and groundwater contamination
- the main principles of assessing the need for soil rehabilitation and the main rehabilitation methods

Implementation and methods of teaching

The course includes eight two-hour contact teaching sessions, which include a visit to the Kujala waste station. More precise scheduling, tasks and contents of the course will be announced at the first contact teaching session.

Timing and attendance

Participation in contact teaching is desirable. If the student is unable to participate in the visit to the Kujala waste station, he must take care of the compensatory performance himself or submit proof of his absence (e.g. medical certificate) to the teachers in charge.

Working life cooperation

Participation in the contact teaching sessions of the course is desirable. If the student is unable to participate in the field visit, he must provide the teachers in charge, for example, with a medical certificate.

Learning environment

The course is implemented as contact teaching in ZOOM. One contact teaching session in May will be organized at the Kujala waste station in Lahti. All course materials can be found on the course's Moodle platform.

Student time use and work load

The calculated load of the course is 135 h, which consists of contact teaching, field visits, and course assignments.

Contents

The "Spoiled countries" section of the course covers the following topics:
- Legislation
- Renovation planning and risk assessment in the evaluation of the need for renovation
- High-quality field work
- Sampling planning
- The most common methods of restoring contaminated land

Assessment criteria

The grade for the "Spoiled Countries" section of the course consists of grades for self-study and group assignments, which are 50% of the total course grade.

The grades for the waste management section consist of 50% of the assignments and 50% of the exam grade. In the borderline case, the exam grade is emphasized.
