Implementation and methods of teaching

The aim of the course is to deepen the student's knowledge of printmaking. The course focuses on the issues of spatiality and size in printmaking and the relationship of scale and volume to expression. Primary methods include woodcut, drypoint and monotype, and various applications of these methods.

The course will practice the realisation of a work designed for a space in a way that it considers the scale and placement. The learning is based on project-based work, where the student/group of students design a work for a space, create it and display it. The work is created in a guided way, taking into account the specific realisation needs of the author(s). The course will end with a final review of the work and a collective discussion

Timing and attendance

The course is organised annually. Requires attendance at the Lappeenranta campus from Tuesday to Friday from 9-16.The course cannot be taken remotely. Participation in the course supervision and the final discussion is also part of the course.

Alternative completion methods

The course cannot be completed other than by attending classes at the Lappeenranta campus.

Exam retakes

If the student does not obtain an acceptable grade in the course, he/she must repeat the course in the following year or complete the missing parts.

Learning environment

Lab, Lappeenranta, Printmaking studio

Student time use and work load

One credit is equivalent to 27 hours of work for a student. A total of five credits is about 135 hours of study.

Contents

The course is an exercise in the realisation of a work designed for a space, in a way that it considers the scale and placement. The aim of the course is to teach the realisation of a spatially designed work, the awareness of the stages involved in the work and the consideration of scale and volume in the realisation of the work. The work can be created individually or in a small group. The course is guided by reflection on the work with the teacher.

Components of task implementation:
- Choosing a space and thinking about how to make a artwork
- Designing the work, sketching it and composing it in the context of the space
- choosing a rational working method and materials
- working out the idea for the chosen printmaking material(s).
- planning the printmaking process and test proofs
- printmaking and revisions
- finishing and installation of the work
- final discussion
