Learning outcomes

Proficiency level B1

The students will be able to
- read a text in his/her field in order to understand its main idea
- use the most important Finnish concepts in his/her field both in speech and in simple texts
- knows enough vocabulary in his/her field to be able to follow a lesson or lecture in Finnish and understand its main points
- make use of tools to explain new concepts
- can plan language learning independently and assess his/her own progress.

Implementation and methods of teaching

Independent study in Finnish is an online course of Finnish language. Course is an independent study course (100 % self-study), provided in Moodle and it has maximum a few meetings in Zoom. The course is assessed on the basis of performance and learning diary.

Schedule
The course must be completed during one semester (15.1. - 12.5.2024). Schedule is in Moodle platform. Students make their own schedule and studying plan. The student presents his/her plan to the teacher, and the teacher must approve the plan before the student starts implementing it.

Learning material and recommended literature

All the material is online, mostly in Moodle. Students search, select and prepare some of the course material themselves. To complete the course you will need a working computer with a working microphone and camera and sufficient internet access.

Learning environment

The course is in Moodle and has maximum few meetings in Zoom. Students have to book a time in Moodle for the final feedback discussion.

Student time use and work load

The course is 2 ECT, equivalent to about 54 hours of work.

Approximately A2 - B1-level Finnish language skills is required.

Assessment criteria

The grade is based on a few assignments (oral and written), learning diary and the final feedback discussion. Assessment: passed/failed.

Passed: All assignments in Moodle and the learning diary are completed and student have participated in the final feedback. Student have improved his/her/their language skills and learned how to improve his/her/their language skills independently.

Failed: Assignments in Moodle have not been completed, learning diary is not finished or/and student don't participate in the final feedback discussion.
