Implementation and methods of teaching

The course introduces students to printmaking as an art form and to different printing methods and related working processes. The main focus of the basic studies is on practising techniques and experimenting with methods.The course also introduces the materials and equipment used in the different printing methods and teaches how to work safely in a printmaking workshop.

The theoretical part of the course covers the history of printmaking, the differences between the various printmaking methods and the phenomena of printmaking in contemporary art. The course will also cover the vocabulary of printmaking, concepts related to the art form and the ways of marking prints. The work and its results will be reflected together in a final discussion at the end of the course.

Timing and attendance

Who is the course for: first year of fine arts.

The course is held in a printmaking workshop, where the methods are practised under the guidance of a teacher from Tuesday to Friday for four weeks. The course requires the student's presence in the workshop. The course cannot be taken remotely. The course also includes participation in a joint final examination.

Alternative completion methods

Attendance rate 80%. The course can only be completed by attending a printmaking studio on the Lappeenranta campus.

Working life cooperation

Third or fourth year students who are familiar with printmaking techniques can be accepted as trainees.

Exam retakes

If a student does not obtain a pass in a course, he or she must repeat the course the following year or complete the missing parts of the course.

One credit is equivalent to 27 hours of work for a student. A total of five credits is about 135 hours of study

The course introduces students to printmaking as an art form and to different printing methods and related working processes. Assessment criteria

Completion of the course requires attendance (80%), participation in class, participation in the final discussion, successful completion of assignments and active participation in discussion.

Failure to complete:
- repeated absences from lessons and teaching situations
- significant failure to meet the learning objectives
- incomplete completion of assignments
- poor knowledge of the methods to be practised and the materials involved
- disregard for workshop instructions and safety at work
- non-attendance at final discussions and lectures

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

- Can generate ideas for artwork and produce work/works using printmaking techniques
- Can identify different printmaking techniques in a guided way and understand the working processes involved.
- Can participate in guided learning discussions
- Can search for professional information in their field

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

- Can apply a wide range of options to their artistic practice.
- Can independently and in a guided manner realise a work using printmaking techniques on the basis of their ideas and develop their work on the basis of the feedback received
- Can independently identify and compare the printmaking techniques used and understand the working processes involved.
- Can evaluate and justify competence and set artistic, content and technical development objectives
- Be able to follow and describe the professional discourse in their field

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

- Can apply and develop a variety of options when working with printmaking techniques.
- Can use what they have learnt in a planned and creative way when creating art works made with printmaking techniques and apply the feedback they have received
