Learning outcomes

- use basic grammar sufficiently well to manage in professional language studies
- use English in everyday situations
- discuss and write about familiar topics.

Implementation and methods of teaching

Online course. Independent studies.

Note: There are no more places available: 50 students registered on 31 January 2024.

Timing and attendance

Online course. Exercises, tests, and written assignments to be completed independently through Moodle according to the time plan. A Moodle exam. The instructions are all in Finnish.

Self-study materials and assignments on Moodle.

Exam retakes

Students who fail the course will need to complete the course requirements within one year (12 months) from the end of the course period. Consult the teacher for retake instructions.

3 x 27 hours, the workload is spread evenly during the course

Contents

- revision of essential grammar: sentence structures incl. conjunctions, verbs (tenses, active/passive), articles a/an/the, comparison of adjectives, prepositions

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

The course is targeted to students whose grade for English at matriculation exam was lower than C, or who have not studied English in senior high school (lukio), or whose level of English is below B1 according to the Common European Framework. The course is taught at level B1.2/B2.1. This course cannot be included in compulsory language studies. The instructions on Moodle are in Finnish.

Assessment criteria

Written assignments, tests and exam are completed successfully as specified by the teacher.

The student has a good command of the course content. The student can deliver messages clearly in writing; possible problems with grammar and vocabulary do not hinder communication.
