Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
• Pass the New HSK Level 4 test and prepare for level 5
• Further improve their listening, reading, speaking and writing skills;
• Understand basic language materials that they encounter in their daily life, work and other common social occasions;
• Communicate and exchange ideas with others on familiar topics and to describe briefly basic situations relevant to these topics;
• Analyze and evaluate cultural representations in historical and disciplinary context, with the understanding that standards of evaluation are themselves historically produced and contingent.
• Reach an intermediate level in Chinese proficiency, which is approximately equivalent to Level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

56 h of contact teaching sessions (45 h of lectures, 4 h of quizzes and written tests and 7 h of exercises), 25 h of independent study (preview and review, group work, assignment, final exam preparation).

Contents
Intermediate Chinese 1 is a medium level Chinese course for international students. The course is designed for students who have learned New Concept Chinese (1&2&3) or have achieved the corresponding Chinese proficiency (mastery of basic Chinese grammar and about 800 syllables and 1500 Chinese characters). The emphasis of this course will still focus on the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing using both pinyin phonetic and simplified Chinese characters. The course will continuously teach more than 86 new syllables frequently used in communication, over 300 new Chinese characters and more than 67 new grammar items as well as the practice for the HSK 5 and HSK6 test. This course is for intermediate level students.
