Learning outcomes

This studio course includes the following parts and their respective learning goals:

Sustainable Design Theory (5 ECTS)
The student is able to
- describe the principles and opportunities of environmental and ethical thinking in design
- acquire information about product life cycles, materials, manufacturing methods, legislation and eco-efficient technologies and practices
- describe eco-efficient product development strategies.

Sustainable Design Workshop (15 ECTS)
The student is able to
- design products with consideration of life cycles, materials, manufacturing methods, legislation and eco-efficient technologies and practices
- use systemic thinking and understands the basics of innovation ecosystems
- use eco-efficient product development strategies.

Implementation and methods of teaching

How to complete the course:

1. Active attendance at the course 80%. Attendance is mandatory in the first time.
2. Completing assigned tasks with approval and returning them in the agreed schedule
3. Presenting your own tasks and participating in criticism
4. Course evaluation framework

If you are unable to complete the things required in the course in the given schedule, a replacement schedule and tasks must be agreed with the teacher

Timing and attendance

Sustainable Design theory (5 credits), Independently as an online course.

The student can
- describe the principles and possibilities of environmentally efficient and ethical thinking
- acquire information related to products and environments, life cycle, materials, manufacturing methods and environmentally efficient technologies and methods of operation
- describe environmentally efficient product development strategies.

Sustainable Design - workshop (15 credits)

The student can
- to design products and environments by utilizing information related to their life cycle, materials, manufacturing methods and environmentally efficient technologies and methods of operation
- basics of systems thinking and innovation ecosystems
- consider environmental efficiency in product development work.

Assessment criteria

“ The course is evaluated on the basis of the assignments; student’s activity in participating and returning the tasks according to the schedule, ability to understant and implement basic terminology and principles of sustainable design as well as the high-quality outcome of the main task of implementation.”

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student is able to:
- conduct a moderate sustainability research
- recognize a few sustainable methods in product design and manufacturing
- apply moderately the research in a design project
- present his/her research according to the instructions
- Student is participating poorly and without informing the teacher.
- Student hands in the presentation late.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student is able to:
- conduct a detailed sustainability research
- recognize many sustainable methods in product design and manufacturing
- apply the research in a design project
- create a comprehensive presentation of his/her research
- possible absences are justified and notified in advance to the instructors
- Student hands in the presentation late unless otherwise agreed with the teacher.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student is able to:
- conduct a professional level sustainability research
- recognize and develop new sustainable methods in product design and manufacturing
- apply and develop the research in a design project
- create a professional presentation of his/her research
- Student hands in the presentation according to the timetable.
