Learning outcomes

The student is able to

Implementation and methods of teaching

Thee course will start on 26.9.2023 with a presentation of the content, implementation and exercises and orientation exercises at LAB's Mukkulankatu 19 campus. Language of teaching and performance is Finnish.
Most of the face-to-face teaching and supervision of the course will take place at the M19 campus in the form of professional discussions, interviews, lectures, coaching and interactive exercises, which require the student to attend the scheduled contact days. Parts of the contact days may later, by mutual agreement, also take the form of virtual learning in Microsoft Teams. The course includes five main exercises, which are carried out during the contact hours and independently outside the contact hours. There will be no hybrid delivery of the course.
During the course, students will update their professional portfolio and development plan, among others, as independent work, focusing on their content communication and the quality of their work samples. The materials and all assignments will be published in Microsoft Teams and the student will complete the assignments independently.

There are scheduled teaching days approximately once a week. Attendance requirement for the lessons is at least 80%.

Learning material and recommended literature

Literature, studies and reports. More detailed learning/source materials will be shared or announced during the course in the Microsoft Teams group of the course.

Alternative completion methods

Recognition of previously acquired knowledge only with equivalent content of at least bachelor's level (BA).

Working life cooperation

The course may include visits from design companies and industrial design alumni.

Student time use and work load

The 5 credits of the course are built up through 135 hours of total work. In terms of time, the work is divided into 64 hours of guided face-to-face or virtual activities (1 day/week) and 71 hours of independent work as determined by the student.

Contents

The student will be able to
- define his/her professional profile
- develop his/her professional profile in a goal-oriented way
- produce an appropriate portfolio of their own competences for further studies or job search

The aim is to clarify the student's identity as a designer and professional competence - to understand what influences the kind of designer the student is now and what he or she wants to become in the near future. The course will raise awareness of the steps that should be taken to help the student achieve the goals he or she has set. The focus is already on the period before the studies, from which the focus is shifted to the plans after the studies.

The course also focuses on communicating about oneself and one's competences and on further developing one's own professional portfolio as a communication tool. The course will also anticipate future job search processes, simulate/scenario different situations, acquire competences, prepare material to demonstrate competences, search for and approach a suitable employer.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

Prerequisite skills:
a) Knowledge and skills equivalent to at least five semesters of the industrial design curriculum (approximately 150 credits).
b) At least basic software skills:
* Rhinoceros 3D or SolidWorks 3D or equivalent modeling software.
* Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign or equivalent graphical software.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)
