Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- understand the main features about the history of the cities
- identify and define different values in urban built environment as well as means to preserve them
- understand important international treaties and national legislation protecting valuable environments as well as the meaning of international organisations in preservation
- present case examples to demonstrate the variability of built heritage and means to preserve it (for example town planning, local participation of civil society, renovation)

Implementation and methods of teaching

The course is carried out virtually, containing virtual lectures, learning materials in Moodle and individual courseworks. Finnish students can submit their courseworks in Finnish.

Timing and attendance

The course will be available on 20th September in Moodle. The duration of the course is until 15th December. Submission of the courseworks is scheduled in Moodle.

Contents

The main topics in the course are the following viewpoints:

• Understanding how the values of urban environment are understood and defined.
• How to enhance preservation in international and national levels
• The opportunities to protect valuable built environments in challenging situations
• Evaluate different processes of preservation through case studies and analyse the roles and impacts of different stakeholders in them.
• Develop ideas by which methods the preservation of urban environment can be carried out in different case studies.
