Learning outcomes

Proficiency level: A1

The student can speak and write Finnish in everyday situations.

Implementation and methods of teaching

Lessons on Zoom and independent work.

Timing and attendance

Autumn semester 2022. Active participation is required.

Learning material and recommended literature

Materials given by the teacher. The material is in Moodle.

Exam retakes

Written and oral exam. Written exam on the 7th of Decamber at the university (on Lappeenranta campus)

Lessons via Zoom and exercises in Moodle.

Approximately 135 hours (meetings + independent work)

Contents

The course content will be the following:
- greetings
- introduction and personal details
- questions and answers
- numbers and alphabet
- countries, languages, nationalities
- pronunciation
- genitive and partitive cases
- telling about one’s everyday life
- food and drink
- shopping, restaurant and café
- time expressions
- verb types 1–5 and present tense.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

No previous Finnish skills required.

Assessment criteria

Written and oral exams to evaluate, how well the student can
- write in Finnish
- understand Finnish texts
- understand Finnish talk
- speak in Finnish.

1-5

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student
- recognizes some phrases and can use them
- understands some questions and can answer them
- recognizes and uses some time expressions
- introduces herself/himself by few sentences
- can recognize and use few words studied in the course
- can write few sentences in Finnish on a given topic
- pronounces Finnish quite understandably.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student
- understands and can use many phrases
- understands basic questions and can answer them
- understands and uses basic time expressions
- introduces herself/himself and can tell many things about her/him and her/his everyday life
- understands and uses the basic vocabulary studied in the course
- can write a short text in Finnish on a given topic
- pronounces Finnish understandably.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student
- understands and can use all or almost all phrases studied in the course
- understands and can answer to all or almost all questions studied in the course
- understands and can use all or almost all time expressions studied in the course
- introduces herself/himself in quite versatile way
- understands and uses vocabulary studied in the course quite extensively
- can write a text in Finnish on a given topic with only few errors
- pronounces Finnish understandably.
