Learning outcomes

The student is able to

Implementation and methods of teaching

Majority of the work will take place at classrooms in small teams or online in zoom (depending on the pandemic situation) where project work and guest lectures are held. The main exhibition design project is to design the Institute of Design Degree show, Spring 2022.
This class is built around team work, and finding design solutions by visual research and design thinking, and applying common design methodologies to practice.

Timing and attendance

Minimum 80% attendance.

Alternative completion methods

Degree Show 2022 might require special knowledge and skills outside of the exhibition team, formed by the students in this module. If you are interested in working for Degree Show producing for example photography, video production, websites or marketing – reach out to the teachers. There are opportunities to be involved outside the course curriculum.

Working life cooperation

This is a live project. Students will create the exhibition from concept to reality, design, manage and order materials and build the exhibition. They will connect with partners and sponsors and market the exhibition.

Learning environment

Majority of the work will take place at classrooms where project work and guest lectures are held. Or online if the situation so requires.
Possible visits to museums and exhibitions are organised. Independent visits to museums, galleries, fairs, showrooms and other exhibitions or online exhibitions are highly recommended during this course.

Student time use and work load

In order to develop a good concept and achieve a live exhibition in May, this course is running through the whole Spring semester 2022. However, the intensity varies, where more work is required at the beginning and during the final weeks of the course. More independent time is scheduled mid course.
This course will feature an extensive exhibition design project that will be done as group work. Some of the work will take place outside of lecture days, where the group is free to arrange its own schedule, working method and space.
Participation in crit sessions is mandatory.

Depending on individual workload, students can do 5 to 15 credits on this course.

Contents

This course focuses on developing and building the Institute of Design Degree Show 2022, opening on Design week (1st week of May 2022). The students can join the full module (15 ECTS) or individual courses (á 5 ECTS). The module is: MI00BS05-3004 Exhibition architecture, MI00BS06-3004 Exhibition design and communication and MI00BS07-3004 Narrative in exhibition design.

The design process is done in stages to develop the ideas into full concepts that can be applied also to exhibition architecture and other areas of exhibition design and communication. Through this process the students will learn the main tools and theories on how to approach temporary, ephemeral spaces; to think of 3D space, to research and visualise ideas and understand what curator’s and other stakeholder’s roles are.
This course will feature group work, as the main project will be created in teams.
Guest lecturers are invited to provide more in-depth knowledge on what special requirement exhibitions and fairs have.
This part of the module has a strong focus on visual identity, environmental graphic design, communication and marketing.
Students will learn basic project management skills by acting as project managers.

We encourage a cross-disciplinary approach. Everyone is welcome to join, but please note that Institute of Design students will take priority. Previous knowledge on basics of presentation techniques and design processes is a must.
No previous experience in exhibition design is required. Students from all years are welcome.

Assessment criteria

Assessment will be based on the main project results and progress. Active participation, group working skills, peer review, design process and project management, knowledge and application of exhibition design terminology and best practices.

Student uses professional terms and knows how to implement a concept design process in exhibition design. They participates in discussions and presents work.
They understand and can verbalise the visual, marketing and artistic needs and requirements of the project client.
They work in a group setting, and take responsibility of designing and completing an element of the exhibition design project.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student uses industry terminology and knows how to implement a concept design process in exhibition design in a creative way.
They actively participate in discussions in a group setting and presents their work verbally with compelling visualisations to clients.
They understand and can verbalise the visual, marketing and artistic needs and requirements of the project client and apply that to their own work.
In a group project, they share their knowledge and ideas for the group's benefit.
They take on a bigger part of the project and are able to deliver a cohesive, visually effective end result.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student uses and understands industry terminology, theory and best practices. They are an active participant in discussions within the group and with the client. They present to client in a clear and coherent way, using compelling visual material and is able to stand behind their design.
They listens to, understand and are able to design to meet client's visual, marketing and artistic needs. They recognise and analyse cultural and social aspects surrounding the exhibition theme and are able to apply that knowledge in the design process. They can create a story in the exhibition experience.
They actively develop ideas to full designs together with the group. They take into consideration the strengths and ideas of the group and applies that in their own work, while sharing information and ideas.
They are responsible for delivering a coherent, current design that meets the clients´ and exhibition visitors' objectives.
