Learning outcomes
The student is able to
- identify and use the vocabulary and phrases for common everyday
situations
- tell about themselves and understands basic questions
- read and write sentences.
Previous knowledge of Finnish language is not required.
Implementation and methods of teaching
The study module is carried out as contact classes, held twice a week (2 h per class). In addition, the students will have to do the different kinds of exercises given by the teacher.
Teaching method: lectures, oral and written exercises and assignments, conversation, independent and team work, e-learning, written exam. Bring your own device!
Timing and attendance
Contact classes will be organized during the first period, from 5th Sep to 11th Oct 2019. 80 % presence required.
Assignments with deadlines and details on exam(s) will be given during the course.

Alternative completion methods
If you already have the required knowledge on the Finnish language and culture, you can take an exam (exemption test) to demonstrate your skills. Please contact the teacher.

Written exam: Fri 18th Oct from 9 to 11 a.m.
Possibility for a retake will be considered if needed.
Learning environment
Contact teaching will be carried out mainly in classroom. Surrounding neighborhood and e-learning are used when suitable.
Student time use and work load
3 ECTS = approx 81 hours of study, of which 24 hours as contact classes (one 2-hour-class twice a week) -> approx 57 hours of independent work (average: 9,5 hours per week)

- family and describing oneself
- languages, countries and nationalities
- basic greetings and phrases
- forming questions
- cardinal numbers
- days of the week
- some basic adjectives
- verb types 1-5 in the present tense (positive, negative forms)
- vowel harmony
- basic pronouns
- genitive

No previous knowledge of Finnish is required.
Assessment criteria
Attendance (80 % required) and active participation during the course, including homework. Learning diary. Delivery of oral assignment(s), written and oral test/exam passed.
