Learning outcomes

The student is able to:
- describe the manufacturing processes of particleboard, MDF and OSB board products
- know the main end uses of each board type
- define the technical properties of different board types
- know the further processing possibilities of different board types
- produce particleboard in laboratory environment and make standard quality tests

Implementation and methods of teaching

The course introduces:
- Particle board, MDF and OSB industry and history
- learn the manufacturing processes of particle board, MDF and OSB
- understand the applications of particle board, MDF and OSB
- know the technical properties of particle board, MDF and OSB products
- particle board is produced in the laboratory
- be able to test the manufactured boards according to the standards
- possible excursion to a particle board mill
- board mill maintenance, safety, automation and production planning

Basic knowledge of wood technology and the forest industry is useful but not essential.

Assessment criteria

• All weekly assignments must be completed satisfactorily
• All laboratory work must be completed (reports and seminar presentation completed)
• All tests must be performed
• Each exam is graded 0-100%
• The course grade base is the average of all exams
• <50% = 0
• 50-59% = 1
• 60-69% = 2
• 70-79% = 3
• 80-89% = 4
• 90-100% = 5
• Laboratory work: particle board production
