Implementation and methods of teaching

Composition:
The goal of this introductory course is gain a better understanding of how composition/sommittelu is one of the fundamental areas in the visual arts that underlies and touches on all disciplines, from drawing to installation, from computer graphics to cinema, from sculpture to dance.
Composition/Sommittelu is how the artist physically tells their story by the way in which they arrange of figures, objects, shapes, or other materials (on a page, screen, or stage). Each decision about the position of an object or, the point of view, can influence the thoughts and feelings you create in the viewer/participator. The goal of the course is that the student becomes more aware of the role of composition and how it can help their artworks convey more closely their thoughts and feelings.
In the course students will be given a number of assignments where they will explore various compositional possibilities by drawing a number of simple themes, such as landscapes, interior spaces, objects, and still life situations. In other words, students will take the same subject/object and slightly or radically alter the way we look at that object by how the object is positioned on the paper. The idea here is explore how composition can either help support your idea/feeling or can undermine what you are trying to say. The same concept will be explored in how the artwork is presented and positioned on the wall, or in a three-dimensional space. In other words, how composition plays an important role in all levels from the actual drawing on paper to how one physically presents the artwork on the wall, or in creating three-dimensional installations. The goal here is help develop some basic skills in understanding how composition works; how it helps to create a link between the artists thoughts and feelings and the audience who experiences the artwork.

Assessment criteria

Composition: Attendance to all lectures is primary. Every student should make school their top priority. All other matters must take second place. Any missed days will result in a lowering of your grade (unless for doctor appointments. That said, doctor appointments should be arranged in the mornings to avoid conflict with the course). All assignments must be turned in, otherwise, it will cause a reduction in the grade. Fulfilling those two essential areas will give you a passable grade. Beyond that, the time and energy you put into the course will be seen in the works you produce and will determine the final grade. Most students can make a 4-5 grade-point just by attending and showing interest in the course. More than 1-2 days missed in the course will mean you will have to take the course over again.
