Implementation and methods of teaching

Teaching and guidance, as well as independent work

Timing and attendance

From 17.02 to 10.06, due to the varying content and working methods of the projects, the student will be provided with a flexible working schedule as much as possible. However, the work will include agreed regular group and individual meetings with the supervisors. The total workload of the project should correspond to 15 credits, which is 405 hours. If the completion of the project does not require the full 15 credits, the course can also be completed as a partial credit.

Learning environment

Lectures, personal/group guidance, M19 facilities.

Student time use and work load

The 15-credit course's competencies are divided into scheduled guided activities and independent work defined by the student. The guided activities include both group guidance and personal guidance required for individual projects.

Contents

Midway Studio offers students the opportunity to develop their product ideas to a level where they can be presented to the general public, potential investors for further development, or companies interested in the ideas. These ideas may have originated from previous coursework or be independent concepts developed elsewhere. The key requirement is that the ideas must be feasible to develop to the desired level within the course duration.

In addition to product development, students will create diverse and high-quality presentation materials during the course. Depending on the product idea, these materials may include models, promotional videos, product images, and 3D renderings. Students will also practice presenting their products orally. The goal is to compile a comprehensive presentation of the course results for a design event/exhibition to be held in autumn 2025.

To assess the development potential of the ideas, students must submit a report describing the current state of their product/idea to the supervising instructors. The report should be sent in PDF format to the instructors at harri.kalliomaki@lab.fi and ari.kankanen@lab.fi. Based on this report, the feasibility and suitability of the ideas for the course will be evaluated. Students will be accepted into Midway Studio based on this assessment.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.
