Implementation and methods of teaching
This studio will design and implement the Institute of Design's spring exhibition. The exhibition will open in Lahti in May. The course includes visits to exhibitions, lectures and goal-oriented design work. The students plan the exhibition concept together. The exhibition process will be first studied and then put into practice.
The whole exhibition design process is carried out in different group configurations. Everyone can use their strengths, deepen their core competences or acquire new skills.
The exhibition studio is multidisciplinary. All LAB Design Institute students from different majors and different years are welcome. Exchange students are also welcome.
Please note that this course is only related to the realisation of the exhibition and does not include participation in the exhibition as a presenter. The curating of the exhibition works is a separate process.
Timing and attendance
80% attendance. The course lasts for the whole spring semester and requires commitment throughout the course, including during the construction phase.
The theoretical part and the exhibition conceptualisation will take place in the early part of the year. In March, the exhibition design and implementation phase begins. In the implementation part, students are divided into working groups that schedule their work in relation to the tasks to be implemented: for example, communication materials or workshop work on the exhibition architecture.
Learning material and recommended literature
Books and references can be found in the course moodle.
Working life cooperation
In cooperation with the Lahti Museum of Visual Arts Malva and other partners and stakeholders of the exhibition.
The students themselves are in contact with, for example, the suppliers of the materials and the various stakeholders of the exhibition.
In the Exhibition Design Studio, they meet professionals working on exhibitions in different roles and visit exhibitions and museums to learn about the solutions.
Exam retakes
The exhibition studio takes place every spring.
Learning environment
Campus, workshops, Malva, various exhibition visits and necessary company visits, Lahti city space.
Student time use and work load
The theoretical part at the beginning of the course must be completed by everyone, i.e. compulsory attendance. After that, the work is divided into working groups which schedule their work according to the parts to be carried out. The working time is also scheduled in the plan. About a month before the opening of the exhibition, students can prepare to work according to the requirements of the deadline.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.
The course is open to all students of the Institute of Design, all years and all majors. No previous experience is required, but an interest in exhibition work and commitment is essential.
The course will be attended by a multidisciplinary group of students, where each student will have the opportunity to develop their skills in their own field and at the same time have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge.
