The student is able to
- describe the principles and opportunities of environmental and ethical thinking in design
- acquire information about product life cycles, materials, manufacturing methods, legislation and eco-efficient technologies and practices
- describe eco-efficient product development strategies.

Implementation and methods of teaching

How to complete the course:

1. Active attendance at the course 80%. Attendance is mandatory in the first time.
2. Completing assigned tasks with approval and returning them in the agreed schedule
3. Presenting your own tasks and participating in criticism
4. Course evaluation framework

If you are unable to complete the things required in the course in the given schedule, a replacement schedule and tasks must be agreed with the teacher

Sustainable Design - workshop (15 credits)

The student can
- to design products and environments by utilizing information related to their life cycle, materials, manufacturing methods and environmentally efficient technologies and methods of operation
- basics of systems thinking and innovation ecosystems
- consider environmental efficiency in product development work.

- Student hands in the presentation late.

Student is able to:
- conduct a detailed sustainability research
- recognize many sustainable methods in product design and manufacturing
- apply the research in a design project
- create a comprehensive presentation of his/her research
- possible absences are justified and notified in advance to the instructors
- Student hands in the presentation late unless otherwise agreed with the teacher.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student is able to:
- conduct a professional level sustainability research
- recognize and develop new sustainable methods in product design and manufacturing
- apply and develop the research in a design project

Execution of the Design Workshop/Project:
- Biomaterials workshop
- Project in co-operation with LAB RND and/or industry/company.

Project will include design brief, design process, tutoring the team work and possible visits/excursions. The lengths of the project may vary.

Implementation and methods of teaching

Studio contains three parts:
1. Sustainable Design theories and practices. Teacher: Annariina Ruokamo
2. Sustainable Design and Production Methods workshop. Tutors: Minna Cheung and Susanna Björklund. Studio master: Jarkko Karppinen.
3. Knit Design basics. Teacher: Pia Heilä. Autumn 2024. Only for LAB Wearable design full-time students.

All parts contain face-to-face contact lessons at school as well as independent working.
Collaboration with companies or reseach projects possible.

Timing and attendance

Studio parts are scheduled in the Time-Edit. The reservation shows teacher's name when it is face-to-face. Independent working is marked as 'independent'.

All parts require student's active attendance according the instructions provided by the teacher.

Student time use and work load

Total 20 ECTS = 540 hours is devided into three parts. More details provided by the teacher at the beginning of each part.

Sustainable Design and Sustainable Design and Production Methods (parts 1 and 2) total 15 ECTS.
Knit Design total 5 ECTS.

Contents

In Sustainable Design and Production Methods part the main focus is in fashion product development using circular design strategies (part 1.). Especially product lifetime longevity is emphasized by reuse. Objective is to experiment and create new, commercial products and document the process in order to analyze the possibilities of scaling.

Sustainable Design and Production Methods requires know-how from LAB 1st and 2nd year compulsory cources.

Assessment criteria

Active attendance 80%.
All assignments hand-in according to the schedule and approved.
The final grade is the average of all parts. Each part is assessed by the teacher of that part.

Unclear absences. Absences more than 20% of the amount of contact lessons.
Unfinished and not handed-in assignments at the end of the part.
Exceptions must be agreed with the teacher before the end of that particular part.

Workshop consist of apr. 3 different design projects connected with product design with consideration of life cycles, materials, manufacturing methods, legislation and eco-efficient technologies and practices as well as using eco-efficient product development strategies and responsibility in a communication design.

Projects vary with their lenght -> They can be 1-2 month design project, PD6 (product development in 6 hrs) and hackaton style of design exercises.

Workshop contains also themed lessons and visiting lectures and other exercises.
Students return the learning diary in the end of the whole workshop.

Implementation and methods of teaching

Studio contains three parts:
1. Sustainable Design theories and practices. Teacher: Annariina Ruokamo
2. Sustainable Design and Production Methods workshop. Business collaboration with LUHTA. Tutors: Minna Cheung and Susanna Björklund. Studio master: Jarkko Karppinen.
3. Knit Design basics. Teacher: Pia Heilä. Autumn 2023. Only for LAB Wearable design full-time students.

All parts contain face-to-face contact lessons at school as well as independent working.
Collaboration with companies or reseach projects possible.

Studio parts are scheduled in the Time-Edit. The reservation shows teacher's name when it is face-to-face. Independent working is marked as 'independent'.

All parts require student's active attendance according the instructions provided by the teacher.

Total 20 ECTS = 540 hours is devided into three parts. More details provided by the teacher at the beginning of each part.

Sustainable Design and Sustainable Design and Production Methods (parts 1 and 2) total 15 ECTS.
Knit Design total 5 ECTS.

Contents

In Sustainable Design and Production Methods part the main focus is in fashion product development using circular design strategies (part 1.). Especially product lifetime longevity is emphasized by reuse. Objective is to experiment and create new, commercial products and document the process in order to analyze the possibilities of scaling.

Sustainable Design and Production Methods requires know-how from LAB 1st and 2nd year compulsory cources.

Assessment criteria

Active attendance 80%.
All assignments hand-in according to the schedule and approved.
The final grade is the average of all parts. Each part is assessed by the teacher of that part.

Learning outcomes

This studio course includes the following parts and their respective learning goals:

Sustainable Design Theory (5 ECTS)
The student is able to
- describe the principles and opportunities of environmental and ethical thinking in design
- acquire information about product life cycles, materials, manufacturing methods, legislation and eco-efficient technologies and practices
- describe eco-efficient product development strategies.

Sustainable Design Workshop (15 ECTS)
The student is able to
- design products with consideration of life cycles, materials, manufacturing methods, legislation and eco-efficient technologies and practices
- use systemic thinking and understands the basics of innovation ecosystems
- use eco-efficient product development strategies.

Implementation and methods of teaching

Theory 5 cr contains self learning material + Moodle exam

Workshop consist of apr. 3 different design projects connected with product design with consideration of life cycles, materials, manufacturing methods, legislation and eco-efficient technologies and practices as well as using eco-efficient product development strategies and responsibility in a communication design.

Projects vary with their lenght -> They can be 1-2 month design project, PD6 (product development in 6 hrs) and hackaton style of design exercises.

Workshop contains also themed lessons and visiting lectures and other exercises.
Students return the learning diary in the end of the whole workshop.

- Material based development project
- Company co-operation/industry based project
- Responsible design

Timing and attendance

Theory 5 cr, self learning material during January
Workshop 15 cr January - May apr. 3 days/week with different lectures, projects and other exercises

75% (6/8) attendance required. Absence compensated with extra assignments and discussed with teacher.

Working life cooperation

Projects topics are linked to Research development in LAB and company co-operation projects.
